The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki |

Leather pouch on passenger seat back broken
My '02 540i is in great shape, but various interior and trim bits are starting to crumble. The one that bugs me a lot is the leather seat pouch on the back of the passenger seat. A rivet along the right edge broke, and the plastic strip embedded in the right edge snapped in half. I've search the forum and the web for information on how to repair or replace it, but can't find any parts or information.
I could just try to stick a new expanding rivet in the broken plastic strip, but that would be a half-baked solution that would probably fail again quickly. The elastic along the top of the pouch is pretty taught, and would probably break the rivet off after a short time. Does anyone have any suggestions for a proper fix for this? I know it's a minor thing in the grand scheme, but it really detracts from the car's interior. Thanks for any insight!

Have you considered an automotive upholstery shop? They have the skill and tools to do a neat-appearing job. Refer to your local Checkbook magazine.

I was thinking more of a DIY solution, but I hadn't considered that idea. There's even an excellent such shop up the road from me, put on a convertible top for me last year (on a different car). Plus I'm a Washington Checkbook member, another good tip! Thanks!
