135i Tire/wheel setup for Auto-X

I'm ready to buy a package strictly for auto-cross. I would like a square set-up to help save some money in the long run.

The front wheel well seems awfully small. Anyone out there gone with something wider than the 215/40/18/7.5 factory set-up?

I'm pretty sure that 225/45/17/7.5 will work, but I would like to retain the flexibility to upgrade later.

a 245/40/17 on a 17x8.5 front should be able to fit all the way around with the right amount of camber. I run 245/35/18 with an 18x8.5 + 45 front (with -2.5 deg of camber) and a 265/35/18 with an 18x9.5 +62 rear and it works pretty well, I'd probably jump on 17"s for autocross though due to the lighter weight and cheaper tires.
