The auto-up-down feature for the window is not supposed to operate when the door is open.
Also, the computer in control of these things is a giant state machine. The door open part is probably one thing that tells the computer to go to a state where it can re-learn the extreme ends of the window motion. Just a guess. The window auto-ups until it hits something as a safety measure. I doubt it's a sensor involved, but more likely a current regulator. When the motor is pushing the window up and something is in the way, the current draw by the motor will jump, which may trigger it to stop (or in our case move slightly down, for safety!). Again, just a guess.

My windows will do auto-up/auto-down when the doors are open. They just go to the position they're supposed to be at when the doors are open, and then when you close the door it raises the glass the extra 3/8" or whatever to seal like normal.

Guys, I am new here. I own my first BMW . It is a 316i 1998 Euro. The driver window is suffering a kind of decease called " inching" as per some forums. I must press the button over and over and it only moves 1 inch at time up or down depending on what direction I am trying to put it. So it means that the switch is good and also the motor. I already tried resetting with the door closed and pressing the switch for 10 seconds when the window is up and down. The solution did not worked . Any thoughts ?

If you want to make life easier, just push and hold the button down all they way, and the window will go up without interruption. You may not have noticed that the window switches have two clicks. Pushing it down and holding past the 2nd click will force the window up without stopping.

To the original OP it almost sounds like something's not lined up right causing the window to stop due to the overload of pushing on a foreign object/outta lined door seal or even outta line upper door frame, just sounds fishy
Edit: of course I could be wrong |

You'd think that, but it's not usually the case. The one-touch up/down glitch is high common and is often times not the result of a bad regulator.

window inching problem
Quote:
![]() I did that already several times. For sure I know that the window works. has two clicks. i pushed it down and it passed the second one. I holded the switch there for 10s but any ways the window just travel 1 inch at time in any direction, does not matters if I hold the button.

Man I've had tons of problems with e36 windows but usually I solved them with replacing the plastic slides, or even as simple as disconnecting the battery and reconnecting/ resetting the relays,

help needed with driver windows
Guys
I have a problem with my driver window. my is a BMW 1998 316i EURO. I have tried almost everything possible at the door. I tried resetting the relays by pressing the button during 15 seconds, I check the regulator and it is OK, took of the door panel and I tried opening the motor and moving the magnet back to its "original position" and even I removed the motor out of its position to check it by itself. By having the motor in my hand and connected to the power, it behave the same. It just make a couple of turns. Also, I swap the windows switch and put the right one instead but the same behavior ![]() ![]() ![]() So, for sure the regulator is ok and also the motor, as well as the windows switch. I need another solution. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

thanks for the quick reply.
Basically it turns a couple of time every time I press the windows button. even if i keep the button down all the time. I went to a seller this afternoon and they lend me another motor. I plug it to the power connectors at my car and guess what: same behavior. That was the reason I thing is it not exactly the motor. |

Ah-ha! OK, find your comfort relay and replace it. It should be under the dash...location varies with year. Look it up on Realoem.com

Still with the window problem
Hi there.
I still have the issue with my driver window. My car does not have comfort relay. Windows are controlled by ZKE module but according to another forum, that it unlikely the issue. Any other guess? ![]() ![]()

Could also be a issue with the switch.

if the regulator bushings are failing it will cause the window to move hence it getting off track.
here is a DYI on how to fix the issue yes its on a coupe but the fundamentals should be the same for any other E36. http://www.dvatp.com/bmw/diy/power_window/
