Steering Column Assembly

I have an '85 528e that I bought a few months back. When I got it the dash was taken apart because the dealer had taken it apart to replace the ignition switch but then his mechanics couldn't get it installed back in the cylinder that runs diagonally across the steering column. So now the ignition switch hangs down and I have to start it with a screwdriver. I can deal with this but the reason I want to fix it is because the dash is dismantled there are a bunch of disconnected wires hanging down that I think power the trunk release button and the power windows, neither of which work as a result. If anyone knows a trick to getting that switch into the cylinder and getting it to line up with the key I would be very grateful. I just can't see what I'm doing because the steel hood on the top of the steering column is in the way and I can't figure out how to get it off. Thanks for any help you have.

You may be able to unbolt the underside of the column and get it to tilt downward a bit. That might give you more room. Have you looked at the diagrams on Realoem.com? There may be some useful info from one of them. Good luck.
