New owner - key not working properly

Hi everyone

First post, be gentle! I bought a used 320D SE (2002) 2 days ago and love it. Having a few small issues, one of which is the central locking - the key when the buttons are pushed unlocks the doors, unlocks the boot, but doesn't lock the doors / boot. Is this a common problem?

I find it unusual that everything unlocks but it does not lock. The other strange thing is that I can't lock the driver's door using the key either (I am living in fear that I'll lock everything and then not be able to unlock!). I have 3 keys, all original, including the plastic key.

Any advice appreciated.
