Did anyone option their F10 with night vision?

Just curious -- in what scenarios does it actually help?

I have it. I drive home on a dark, non-illuminated stretch of road with bikers, walkers, and other stupid wildlife.

It helps me to see objects on the side of the road and colors them yellow. If the car senses I'm about to score some points, it flashes a warning in the control display and HUD.

My only complaint about this technology (or, BMW's implementation) is that it takes over the control display and you can't access any other functions. In the Audi A6/A7/A8, the image appears in the instrument cluster, leaving your nav display available for map, etc.

If I were to re-order my car, I'd probably skip it. The xenon headlights are very, very good and less distracting than glancing down all the time.

I agree with wdimagineer. On my way home I go through an area at night where people wear black and avoid crosswalks. It is interesting to see the heat signature of the other cars at stop lights. Neat feature, but not a must.

I have it in my 2011 550xi and it's definitely distracting looking down at it on the nav screen. When ordering my 2012 550i I wasn't going to get it again, but was told that in the 2012 the image is projected onto the windshield. I'll know in 3 weeks when she arrives from Deutschland.

That would be a huge improvement!

Anyway, am I the only one who uses it to find LEOs parked in they favorite radar spots at night?

Unless something drastic has changed this is NOT the case. You will see a warning in the HUD but not actual images.

Wdimagineer-

I was told by the sales manager, who is handling my ****back, that is has not only changed AND I was also shown a pic from BMW's website which shows the infra-red projection onto the windshield.

I'll look for it now and will post...

Please do. Am curious. Already a bit ticked I missed the new promotion which started a week after I took delivery.

I hope it's just software.

Well, this link doesn't show the picture I saw, and as I read it more it certainly leaves me wondering... is it only a warning icon that is displayed or is it the infra-red projection itself? Hoping for the latter...

My HUD for sure is not in full color as the 2012 is (or as it looks to be in the marketing materials). That alone is a huge improvement-

My 2012 528xi built the last week of Nov 2011 only seems to have yellow to orange to redish on the HUD, and the nightvision only puts up an icon on the HUD when a human shaped heat source is in the path. The nightvision image is still on the nav screen. The picutre on site just mentioned looks blue, I do not see blue on my 2012.

It's only a warning icon. I'm not aware of any fundamental changes. Perhaps 2013...? It's only a matter of time before BMW adopts a larger display in the instrument cluster. This seems to be the direction most manufacturers are going. Even the new Dodge Dart has a nearly 100% digital cluster.

Most disappointing part of the car, IMO. The full black panel at least gives you a bit more info.
