It was probably a lot cheaper to design and build. Tweaks to an existing mass produced engine instead of a one of a kind exotic and likely less aluminum in the car. Nevertheless it's a faster more modern car to a lower price which is a nice surprise.

Rear entertainment System to the cost of no less than six IPad 3s. Got to be something very special or it's plain ridiculous.

I wonder if there are any changes to the iDrive, Nav, or entertainment system?
BMW is launching 2013 F10 in July which is an early model year suggesting a mid cycle refresh. In principle the refresh elements should be in the 2013 M5 too. Overseas M5s are 2012s so we won't see anything new in those. But NA M5s are supposed to be 2013.

the MY2013 (July production onwards) will have updated electronics, such as Navi. (BMW Canada already knew about this as the MY2012 has a short production run (now to June).
Therefore, the US version will already have the above. |

So they are having a 2012 M5 until the end of June?

Does anyone have a sense of what I might get for my 2012 550i if I were to sell it and switch to the M5?
I have feeling the M5 path is going to be cheaper than buying M5 wheels/tires and Dinan Suspension.

US based M5 will probably cost around 90k, thats around 10-12k higher than a 550 and its a much better car. 550 is a 550 after all, it wont make heads turn, M5 is an M and will always have people talking about it. That being said, if you trade in your 550 now, at most you'll get 50k for it, maybe a bit more, so you'll lose a lot of money. |

But M5 is definitely the best today, and having driven the M5 and M3 back to back in Spain, there is no contest. M5 is a much better car on the roads.

There is little doubt that the M5 is the best speed and performance value in this class. However, the top Panamera has put down faster times in pretty much every category including track times, 0-60 and 1/4 mile. It's not really a joke, especially since it's more of a 7 or 6GC competitor than 5 series. The "Pajun" is supposed to be aimed squarely at the 5-series and with the Panny already being faster and Porsche having a few years to work with the Pajun with an M5 to compare with I have little doubt that it will also exceed it in pretty much every performance category and likely be a few hundred pounds lighter. I have big hopes for it.
