first dislike of active steering
Ok coming around a sweeping left turn while in the left lane... changing lanes from left lane to right lane
during the lane change the back wheels must have steered into the turn then as the car went from lane change to the sweep of the left turn... the rear wheels seemed to still be changing lanes.. oooohhhh not a fun feeling..... hmmmmm

Not quite sure I understand. Did you have your blinker on? I wonder if that affects it.

prorail...
let me clarify.. as a whole i love AS....but definitely still getting used to it and in this situation it was unexpected... the gt550 can really handle and at high speeds regardless of the fact that it is a big car... this was a big off bank sweeping left turn.. I'm sure the car would have handled it just fine and actually did... I'm sure without AS it would have been fine and I'm sure had i had more experience with what to expect and the little nuances of AS all would have been fine... Just the first time in a very long time ANY car got a little away from me when i didn't want it to.... Just a heads up to newbies of AS if you try and send your car in two directions at the same time .....everyone may become a bit confused....especially the driver that being me... mp

With 4-wheel steering, the yaw angles change, and that, I think, is what is disorienting until you get used to it. If you drive more than one car, it may be just as disorienting to get into a vehicle without it. For that reason, I didn't consider it.

mpress,
I was under the impression that Gran Turismo xDrive models were not available with Integral Active Steering (last I checked, only RWD models had that option available). When I was ordering mine, I was split between a 550i RWD with Integral Active Steering and a 550xi (with servotronic)...the higher residual of the xi won.... Maybe your Servotronic steering (Vehicle-speed-sensitive variable-assist, variable-ratio power steering, per the BMW USA website) had an electronic "brain fart"??? Wouldn't be the first time on a BMW....even a new one

I just checked my "Standard and Optional Equipment" download and for the 2012, and "Integral Active Steering" is shown as an option for RWD only. In my brochure it refers to it as a feature where the rear wheels steer in a particular direction based on speed. However, on the BMW site, "Active Steering" is something else that allows for a variable steering ratio based on speed - it doesn't say anything about the rear wheels. I wonder if you had actually hit something slick in the road? What mode were you in? Were you in Sport+ with DSC turned off maybe? Last edited by starryeyed; 03-21-2012 at 07:57 PM. |
