You can get the precise information by emailing Andreas Harz at BMW in Germany:

andreas.harz@partner.bmwgroup.com

This takes two or three days but generally includes date of manufacture and date and place of delivery by BMW.

Mein Auto: BMW 2002
Hey Guys
I am pondering the purchase of a 1976 2002 that is very sweet looking and riding. Where do I go to find out the history of this car. How about a VIN research site for older cars. CARFAX takes no cars older than 1981.
Any advice out there?

history

Carfax gave me info on an accident my 2002 had been involved with about ten years ago - with only the VIN as reference - but probably really old incidents won't be reported. I don't know of any company that will help in your case. You can find out what month your car was manufactured here:

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/content/view/13/32/

And the German email in this thread will work for details of the manufacturing. Otherwise, best to evaluate the car yourself (or with the help of a pro) to see see what kind of care it's had over the decades.

I have heard the suggestion that you contact your state's DMV and see if you can track the car that way, and go back DMV by DMV for records in the whatever states your car has passed through. That sounds cumbersome.
