Catastrophic Destruction of Two Bimmers / And Their Replacements

Nov 30th 2011. Massive windstorm (70mph sustained gusts) takes down a 100ft, 90 ton Torrey Pine that lands straight down our driveway and buries our garage.

Yes, somewhere under that tree is our garage and our two bimmers.

Our home, not seen on the left side, was also damaged in the back two rooms.

A hundred foot crane was brought in to remove the tree. That process took several days, but it was two weeks before the all the tree debris was removed from the garage.

Most of the tree removed after two weeks. We can now see the cars.

The 550i was crushed by one of the main giant branches. Body was flattened into the chasis. The door window sills were 4-6" lower than normal.

Now with much of the garage debris cleared, we have a clear look at both bimmers. For a while I thought the X6 was going to make it. No part of the tree (we thought) had come down on it. Just a ton of body work from all the garage debris.

Not until we pulled the X6 out did we finally notice that a smaller branch had actually harpooned the hood of the car and speared straight through parts of the engine.

It took out one of the turbochargers and the coolant system.

When the engine was removed for inspection, the final estimate for repair was close to $50,000. The insurance company then rightly declared it a total loss.

Three months later, we have replaced our bimmers. But we still don't have a garage. That is a longer process that involved land survey, easement agreements and permits yet to come.

The bimmers are sitting on the original slab of the garage which is over 100 years old and the footings are all stacked old bricks. That will all have to be removed.

As you can see, we decided to completely replace the 550i, but with a few extra features I missed the first time around (like active roll stabilization and sports transmission with paddle shifters).

***NOTE - For the purpose of the story, you might want to start by reading the bottom (first post) and scroll up.

While I loved the X6 5.0 and loved to take long car trips in it, my wife had a hard time with blind spots and parking it in our 1909 17ft wide garage. We had to have a few trips to the body shop.

So I thought since the 550i is a perfectly great road trip car, why not get one of the more exciting bimmers to drive ... the 335i coupe (M sports package).

My wife generally dislikes two door coupes ... but she's fallen in love with this one.

And when we finally get our garage rebuilt, she'll have an easier time parking it.

Wow, thanks for posting the photos. Sorry to hear of your loss. Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident and the house itself wasn't damaged more than it was. Congrats on the new Bimmers though!

Happy ending, I guess. Did your insurance cover the cost of the tree removal & will they cover the building repair?

City tree so the city had to remove it. But since it was so huge and since they had hundreds of trees to remove (some from the middle of homes) it took a while. I finally hd to pay someone to clear the last of the debris to access our phone and internet cables.

Insurance paid for the cars and is paying for the repairs to the house and the rebuild of the garage.

While I had to fight for every penny of the construction costs, the pay-outs on the autos were fast and generous. (Helped that the cars were new and had low mileage.)

We also lived through that windstorm, although, thankfully, did not suffer the same fate. A huge oak tree came down a block over from us, out into the street so it didn't all on anything. But, the roots pulled the entire front yard, including driveway, up in the house, people got a complete re-landscaping as a result of the tree going down!

Our power was out for about two days. The people behind us were out for close to four. I loaned one of them my Honda 2 KW generator, and ran an extension cord over the wall from one of my working outlets to the other neighbor so that they could at lease run the fridge and keep a couple of lights on. I've lived in So Cal most of my life, and I've never experienced winds like this storm......more like stuff you see on the news for the midwest than Los Angeles!!

Glad to hear nobody was hurt. Cars and property can be replaced, lives can't!

Keith

Remarkable photos of the destruction, and your bad luck...
but, good to read that you and your Fam were fine. Beat on the house insurer.

Great to see that you replaced the cars, and more importantly nobody was injured. But I'm curious. What did you drive for three months following the insurance write off?
