E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993. |

1986 325 Sound system upgrade??
I want to upgrade the sound system in my 325 from 1986. It still has stock everything, and is definitely due for an upgrade but I love the stock look and would love to keep it looking like a stock sleeper.
Does anyone know the best way to bring my system up to date without changing the look of the interior? Should I be wiring through the glove box? Or ash trays (I dont smoke)? Im just looking for some help! Thanks!! |

You can get nice speakers and just use the stock covers. Mine came with some nice oem looking covers so i used those instead. The head unit is tricky. Cd changer in the trunk would work. Look for a stockish looking head unit. I pulled a sony head unit out of a e30 that i was parting and it looks really oem. I know nothing about it. I don't even know if it works. But i always hated a flashy head unit. When i was looking for one i went for the highest rated unit with cons that said "to dim" some of my friends have head units and its like some one has a flash ligth shining in your eyes while your driving at night. Bright whitish blue light. Anyways i have a jvc (instert bunch of numbers here) got it off crutchfield. They give you the proper wiring stuffs. It is a little confusing if you have never done it before. I have boston speakers on the deck and tewters and alpine infinity's in the kick panels. Sounds pretty good to me. I like it clean.

thats right, and doing it right not cheap either. The E30 also has very poor acoustics. My E34 with the same setup, albiet a wagon, is far better, and still running factory tweeters

Yeah I dont really want to break the bank on this either it would just be nice to upgrade it from the stock set up that I have now. So you think my best bet is just to pop off the speaker covers and put in new speakers?
Did you guys replace the front door speakers, front tweeters, and two back speakers? And run it all off of the same deck? Running a seperate system is not my best option? How would running a cd changer in the trunk work? |

Speakers aren't expensive. The tweeters require some modification. You may have to dermal out the area to fit the new tweeters. Changing out speakers is super easy. CD changer would mean new head unit with:
![]() Most new units have 'In' ports. Basically like a DVD player. Mount then Cd changer in the trunk, then run the wire though the car to the back of the head unit. You would have to give it power as well off of something back there.

my suggestion would be to swap out everything. replace the speakers with the same size, put a 10 inch sub in the trunk.
new head units can produce much more power, cleaner signals, offer more inputs and whatnot. over all better sound. obviously audio sound systems have come along way since the 80's. even since the late 90's. go for a clean head unit that isn't all flash. |
