We went in looking to get a X3 35i but after driving it and comparing it space wise to the X5 it wasn't large enough for our needs. It could be we're so used to sitting really far apart in our MDX and the space in it, but the X3 seemed much more cramped up front and didn't have near the amount of cargo volume. We thought it would be pretty cramped with a newborn and all the stuff you have to carry around when traveling and decided to go with the X5 instead. For just an around town vehicle the X3 would have been perfect.

amazing how perception is affected by history. i came to my x3 from a subaru legacy gt, and i feel that it's quite spacious, i'm so much further apart from my wife [is that a benefit?], more roomy in every way, etc.

What's the difference in interior width X3 to X5? Isn't it about 2 or 3 inches?

The first reaction of most people who get in my X3 is amazement at how much space there is - especially those with experience on the RR Sport. Maybe the Oyster leather and sunroof add to the spacial effect.

..............................x3. ..................... x5
front shoulder ....... 57.3......................60
rear shoulde...........56.........................58
cargo max.............63.3......................75.2 [rear seats folded]
cargo.....................27.6......................23.2

these numbers from edmunds, except the cargo max for the x3- i forget where i found that. edmunds shows the x5 with less cargo space than the x3 with rear seats up. i don't know their methodology, and those numbers are surprising.

Cars.com has it as:

Cargo.....................27.6......................35.8

It has the same numbers for cargo max (seats folded)
