Delayed Delivery Compensation

So a series of screw ups, a fired CA etc. led to a friends new X3 sitting at the dealership for a few months before he was finally able to pick it up. They are offering to give him a set of winter tires as compensation. He asked for my opinion of this offer and if instead of taking delivery of this MY 12 he should just order a new '13. (He is now headed out of the country for 2 months so doesn't mind waiting as the car will sit in the driveway anyway)

I wasn't sure what to say. My X3 was also delivered later than I was told and I thought that was pretty standard so I am not sure why they would offer something unless something happened to the vehicle or it was devalued somehow by sitting outside unused for a few months. I can't imagine that this would be the case, but he did say it was completely forgotten offsite and not driven or even cleaned.

Is there anything to worry about with this vehicle? It seems any reduced value by being a model year older is more than made up for by the tire offer? The warranty is still valid so seems like no risk for him. Anything I am missing?

That car, in situ, probably has a dead/nearly dead battery, and a good film of debris and grit on the paint surface. The batt can be resurrected , but not via the high amp 'hot shot' process that dlr will probably give to it. The paint needs a careful, thorough washing before the pre-delivery cleaning, which is often handed out to $8/hr guys who are not exactly detail experts.

And, some questionable gas quality, and possibly some condensation in the gas tank, from sitting that long with a less than full tank...

The winter tires, if top quality, are some comfort, but cranking tires on and off, and on rims twice a season is tough on the wheels, vs having a 'winter set' of a wheel/tire combo, imo.

Those would be my concerns; as to whether one should press for the new MY...dunno.

It is very rare that your buddy will ever get the true story of why his vehicle was delayed so long. If he doesnt mind waiting again I would ask for the new one at the same price.

Some call me a cynic, but salespeople are natural liars. Think of it this way. A few months wait + two months out of country = 5 months. Do winter tires compensate for 5 months depreciation?

Get the new one.

Get the new one. Remember the warranty starts with the car's "in service' date so that means when it is built, not when it was purchased by the customer. Methinks there is more to this story than meets the eye too! I find it very difficult to comprehend that a dealership will "forget" a $45K unit (that they are paying flooring costs on) for any period of time. Your friend will be better served with a new one and let them sell that one as a stock unit (which they will have no trouble doing).

That does not seem right to me. Does not the "in service date" start with date customer takes delivery? That has always been my "in service date".

Confused...

I used to think that too but apparently it is not when the "in service" date is computed by BMW. I am sure someone here knows why this is.

I would like to see some proof of that, the last 3 BMWs I have bought in the past 4 years all had "in-service dates" of the day I took delivery. Also, several CPO cars I am familiar with, all had the same scenario, ie. in service on delivery.

That would make the most sense. Maybe someone who "really" knows will post an answer here.

I think its from the day you took delivery unless you are purchasing a service loaner.

Warranty begins on the date that you take delivery of the vehicle. In no way does it start when the car is finished being built.

I was at the dealership today switching over to summer wheels/tires and while there asked my SA about "in service date". He said it is date vehicle is first sold. He had never heard of it every being based on any kind of production date. So I think that info is just wrong.

Thanks all. I suggested a new order especially if he can wait anyway. Actually I guess it is winter tires on rims that he is being offered. That now outweighs the depreciation but I think you make a good point about the "true story".

I would almost be less inclined now that I know it includes rims as it shows the dealer must really want to make sure he takes delivery of this vehicle.
