Assuming I have blown my HG, I'm looking for replacement/upgrades. I figure the PO had the S/C kit installed on the stock HG and the boost eventually killed it. Has anyone had any luck with this?

If you're looking for upgrades, you could consider having the head polished a bit for better flow. They already flow pretty well from the factory, but there is a little room for improvement.

Also, if you plan on more boost you could go metal hg with ARP studs. You would need to machine both the head and the block to pretty tight tolerances though.

Yep. Asking around for local machine shops.

Good idea, but I'm not sure if my S/C can be adjusted. Don't have the money right now to upgrade, but if the cost is right, I might do this now and upgrade the blower later.

I've ordered a kit to test for exhaust gas in my coolant. Like Corey said, it is likely I have a blown HG, but I want to have some more confidence in that before I start pulling things apart. If I don't have any exhaust gas in my coolant, I'll just try flushing it first.

Progress report. I ordered some stuff that I couldn't find at local shops today so I'll be moving forward this week. I'd like to get a quote from MSW to see how bad it would really be for them to do it. I feel like I can do it, but I want to have a fall back position if I can't finish it by May.

So, tonight I just took a few easy things off and started taking pictures. Unfortunately I can't get home early enough to do it all in the daylight, but w/e. Just makes it harder if I drop stuff.

First pic is an 'as found'. HERE'S YOUR DAMN ENGINE PIC!

Took the strut bar and engine covers off.

My 'Green Top' injectors...?

Coil packs out. I left the spark plugs in to keep crap from falling in. There's no oil in any of the spark plug sockets, but there is some kind of grimey gunk on the aft 3. I couldn't get a good pic.

Turns out it's a Vortech S/C! The rest of the label is all smudged off...

Dinan stickers.

That's all for tonight. I don't want to keep going right now until after the combustion leak test tells me I have exhaust gases in my coolant. I need to start thinking about what it might mean if I do NOT have gases in my coolant... New water pump perhaps?

Thanks for all your help so far guys, it's really made me feel better about this situation. I've set up a picasa account for my pics, so I'll be updating this as I go. If these pics don't work, I'll try a different method, but I'd rather not attach them all to bimmerfest if I don't have to...

Well I just finished the coolant check and it came back negative. No gases in the coolant system. I double and triple checked, and checked the fluid after each test. The fluid was working (it's actually pretty sensitive and will change color just on the CO2 in my breath), so I'm just going to flush the coolant and give it some light duty for a bit. If/when the oil comes back I'll try again, and then start taking things apart, like the water pump and S/C...

On another note, I found an exhaust stud without a nut. It's one of the studs that holds the secondary air system, so it's not causing a problem, per se, but it is a small leak of the exhaust into the engine bay. Unfortunately it's one of the really hard to reach studs. I'll see if I can buy just one nut and find a way to install it.

Keeping this thread updated...

Pelican Parts sells the nuts individually:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...81995-99%29%20

They are special copper nuts to reduce corrosion.

Good to hear your testing came up negative. I hope everything works out well.

Thanks, Ken. I made a pretty big order from Pelican a few days ago, it's a shame to follow up with such a small piece.

I'm not 100% confident, but at this point, tearing everything down is not my first step. It COULD be something else. I'll do a coolant flush this weekend and see if oil comes gushing in.

Last night I had 0 overheating issues. I had the combustion tester, which lets air pass upwards through it, attached to the coolant system and when the car was revving, there were no bubbles in the device, even when I put some negative pressure on it, which would agitate any HG issues. The oil obviously came from somewhere, but I don't think it's the HG right now.

EDIT: P.S. It looked like the fan was wobbling a little? Might have been an optical illusion, but I could have sworn the fan was moving back and forth as it spun. It was going too fast for me to check it and when I cleaned up for the night I forgot to check it by hand when it stopped moving. This couldn't be related, could it??

Flushed the coolant today. Took me a while to get all the bubbles out. Ran the car for a bit and checked for oil, looks clear. I'm going to put the strut bar back on and check it in a few more days.

Oh and I found the copper nut sitting on the steering rack tubes. Quite an odd place for it to just chill out on... weird.
