question about changing instrument cluster, will my mileage be effected?

So my instrument cluster is crap, tried the diy to fix it no success. I ordered one off ebay and I was wondering will my mileage read the same, or does the little chip in the back of the cluster determine that? What does that little chip do? Should I put it in the new cluster?

No, it will not read the same, and it will illuminate a tiny "tamper" indicator on the odometer.

Did you disconnect the battery before you replaced the instrument cluster?

I had my cluster zapped by lightning...insurance bought me a new cluster. Dealer was able to capture the mileage stored somewhere on the car and gave me a mileage statement for resale purposes. Guessing you can't do that with a used cluster.

WRONG!

You can have it matched to what the storage nodule has stored, but that can only be accomplished by some dealerships.

Wow guys what a nightmare this is turning out to be. My '96 came with the older style IC, the one without the eprom storage chip on the back. I really would like to convert to mph, but I don't want to lose my mileage, and it really sounds to me, especially in 2014, that I'm not going to find any place that can change the mileage. From what I understand you can only go into the settings yourself to update mileage if you have the newer style IC with the eprom chip on the back.

If you insist, a BMW dealer can order a replacement cluster with both EEPROMs, on the main circuit board and in the transferable coding plug, programmed with the car's distance.

FYI, a not unusual rate to reprogram the odometer, before the general business was outlawed in Germany, was 50 euros, roughly $70 at the current exchange rate.

OP, if you have an OBD 1 car, you will have to have the dealership reprogram your cluster. You will not get a red dot tamper light. That was with OBD 2 cars. I did an Odometer replacement myself on the M-Tech when the original one crapped out. I replaced the cluster with one from a 95 M3. Worked great... but the mileage went from 335K to 150K. No red dot. That is with OBD 2 cars.

And the tamper light is easy to turn off yourself if you need to with the cluster test functions. Test 9 IIRC.

Hey Jay gave me a fan shroud with expansion tank, if you aren't set on one in perfect condition it will certainly do, and I could send it to you for the price of shipping.

The 2nd pictures shows some unintentional damage. Besides that there are 4 spots, 2 on the bottom and 2 on the top where it looks like some plastic was intentionally cut out. Not really sure why or how it will affect it being installed.
