buying cpo unseen?

Hi,
I am thinking of buying a cpo 335 from the East coast and having it shipped. Thoughts on buying the car without seeing it first please?

You might see if you can find somebody on the forum to go take a look at it for you.

PPI caveat emptor. CPO does not mean free of problems or doesn't have a bad history. Is the dealer the same that sold it originally? Same that took it at lease turn in?

Same dealer that sold original. Very low miles. Thanks for responding.

People buy from private sellers on ebaymotors all the time...so if it's from a reputable BMW dealer then I'd feel even more comfortable. Go for it!

Bought my 07 550 that way. It still had 2 years to go under 4/50k warranty when I bought it CPO. I had the sales guy on the phone and asked him to start at the drivers side door and walk around the car and tell me every little ding and paint hicky on the car. There were none. Car was a low miler and I bought it sight unseen, except for the blue million photos on the dealers website. I had the ecar shipped 500 miles to me and when it arrived it was just as the salesman had described. It was dead nuts perfect. It has been and remains so now at 75K miles.

I wouldn't buy a used car without looking at it first.

I'm willing to risk it with a new car but even then there can be surprises.

A few more thoughts:
Does the car you are looking at still have time left on the 4/50K warranty? The CPO warranty doesn't cover everything. A very low mile car may need a new battery.

I bought a CPO 2010 328i sedan from Vista BMW, Fort Lauderdale, FL, sight unseen. Relied on the salesman's description and on-line photos. I flew down there and car was perfect. Mint condition and 10,000 miles. Drove the car home and it's been perfect. Not too risky if you know who you're dealing with.

Al:

Even if the car is perfect you will have to add to the cost of the car the cost to ship it from the East Coast to the West Coast and this cost does not add to the value of the car.

Wouldn't these dollars be better spent finding a car with more options of a car that was a year newer, etc. I have to believe that you can find the CPO car you want within driviing distance of your home.

My $0.02. YMMV

I generally agree with the point Fred is making, but in some cases it can make sense to buy cross country. Shipping for most cars cross-country is approximately $1k to $1.5k, so if it is the "right" car or "right" deal it could be worth it. Also worth it if you want a specific, hard-to-find spec and need to widen the search to get a match... i.e. try looking for a low mileage, manual, CPO E61. You might have to go far to find one. Even more so if you add color restrictions.

Thank you for all the great advice. The vehicle is 2011 335d. With the packages we are looking for (sp,p) it is hard to locate.

I did the same thing with my 335d. I couldn't find anything to my liking in the Northeast so I bought one in Kansas City. I negotiated the price on the phone and then flew to KC to finalize the deal. I had it shipped to MA the next week. Everything was smooth, but this dealer (private, not BMW dealership) was amazing. He was a huge reason for the successful transaction.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions. Found a used very low milage 335d in my area (not CPO) so I don't have to worry about buying without seeing.

Smart choice, I would never buy a car sight unseen, just too many variables that could go wrong, not worth the hassle, you made a wise decision my friend, enjoy your new car and posts some pics when you get a chance.

Thank you

Thanks to everyone that provided great advice. My 135 has been repurchased and replaced with a preowned 335d. Here is a picture (sorry I am not much of a photographer).

I just did this. The car is on it's way to Buffalo. I'm a little nervous, but hoping everything is up to my expectations. Worst comes to worst, I can just tell them no and get my deposit back. I found a CPO exactly the way I wanted it and pulled the trigger.

Exactly dude, no worries because if you're going through a legit dealer then you can always cancel the whole thing if the car is not up to par...hell, eBaymotors sells cars like this all the time!

Just like me; when you see what you want, pull the trigger and drop that hammer!

I have personally purchased 5 pre-owned cars (and 1 new BMW) sight unseen. In all cases, the way I was helped over the phone and the willingness to go out to the car and describe the imperfections/tire condition/etc made it easy for me. If you're looking for something specific and will not compromise, buying sight unseen is your only choice. There are usually a couple of people at every dealership that can make a long distance transaction as non scary as possible. Just call the place and ask for the sales person with the most experience in shipping cars out of state and you'll probably be in good hands.

When you're dealing with a $15k-$35k car, another $750 is nothing if it expands your supply 100-fold.
I am sure it pays for itself, b/c you're more likely to find a motivated seller.
No brainer.

What about local dealer, can or will they help with purchase especially when you are talking about a particular model they do not have a cpo of. Probably even give them some $$$ to help. Just wondering as if I would do this, the local dealer would be the one I would use for warranty service and other work anyway. Any thoughts?

Hey folks! My CPO 328i comes in on Friday! Any recommendations on things that I should look for specifically before taking delivery? This is my unseen CPO BMW!
