Idle Fluctuation?

I have an X3 35i and absolutely love the vehicle. Its unbelievable solid and well constructed and its been a pleasure to drive from day one. Its also my first BMW.

One question I have whether or not the turbo engine is known for idle fluctuations? I notice it under these two scenarios:

1) regularly when the air conditioner is off, and the car has been driven around a little and then later restarted after sitting there for 15 minutes of longer. (The fluctuation is slight, but noticeable both looking at the tach and hearing it. and goes away after you start driving it.)

2) When started with the AC on, sometimes the idle fluctuation is pronounced (about a 500 rpm variation and very noticeable) and stops when you shut off the AC. It doesn't do it every time though.

Not a big deal, just curious.

Regarding the AC, all cars apply a little extra gas at idle to compensate for the load of the AC compressor to maintain the low idle speed. Heck, even my 1975 Toyota Corolla did this!

That being said, it should not fluctuate that much and should be steady. Almost sounds like the computer is trying to overcompensate in your case and not quite nailing it. I would wait and see if it continues. It may work itself out.

I had brought my X3 (F25) in twice for rough idle when cold and was always told that there was nothing wrong. My foot was reprogrammed for the throttle lag, but I had noticed it as well.

So, when i saw the TSB's referenced in the above link, I knew I wasn't crazy. Brought the car in, got it reprogrammed (the technician still felt it necessary to note that the idle was smooth, but that he did the reprogram anyway) and voila, both the hesitation on tip in and the rough idle when cold are gone!

Hooray for Bimmerfest!
