I drive into my gated community and the gate closes after me, pull in my garage and close the garage door, and BMW makes the design decision that all the doors should stay locked when I open my door so someone can't break in another door. I should also lock my door when I park in my locked garage in order to fully shut off the car since locking my car in my locked garage is the always the best and safest thing to do. The next time I go to the locked garage to get something out of my (locked) car and left my key on the dresser in my bedroom, don't complain you say, just go all the way back into the house and go upstairs to get the key knowing the whole way you are safer because nobody lurking in your locked garage can break into your locked car. But wait, no need to lock your car you say, just push the button once when you get out of your car in your locked garage, you can listen to your music for three more seconds and the car will fully shut off in 8 minutes. Don't expect to use your cell phone in your house in those 8 minutes since it is still paired to your car, but oh, those three seconds of music were so worth the missed call. I feel much better.

Wow. I pull into the garage at either of my homes. I'm not on the phone, so I push the Stop button twice, and get out of the car. I can choose to lock the car or not. I am totally 100% in control.

Sucks for you you can't figure out how your car works. Maybe BMW is not a good choice for you.

I just don't get the BFD about pushing the button twice. Yes, it would be nice if it worked like my E90 where if you held the button longer, it's like a double-press. I've said this before, the logic behind it is like a keyed ignition. One turn of the key goes to accessory position, second turn of the key turns it off. I just push it twice and don't think about it. Can't you just hear all the complaints if it turned off with one push? Then to get to accessory mode you'd have to push it again, being sure your foot is off the brake. Can't win either way. Same with the locks, either pull the handle twice or hit the central lock button as you roll up to your house. iiwii, and it is a BMW after all -- be happy.

Funny you should mention dreams. I recently bought a third Motorcycle. Last night I dreamed that I bought a fourth and was bringing it home without my wife knowing I bought it. I don't know what happened next because I woke up. Hmmm, I wonder what my wife would say if I brought home a woman beach volleyball star.

Come on now, just a little sarcasm to express my frustration with the locking system....wasn't directed at you so no need for the dis.

I love the car, it is my third fiver since 2006....just hate the logic behind the locking system and double push to turn it off.

Admit it, you have pushed the start button twice on the Xd to turn it off just like me, and then had to hit it a third time since it only takes one push.

First of all, a difference. With a key, you still do it in one motion, and you can't get the key out without turning it completely off. No brainer.

The issue for those of us who don't like it is that 1) BMW is the loan wolf so it is something that does not come natural, and there is no real way to know that you did it. You can rail on us all day long about not understanding why we don't like it, but in the case of most of us, we came from other cars and we simply don't think about having to push it twice. Why not a warning tone or honk if the door gets closed and it's still on - or maybe.....hey, I have this brainstorm. Why not make it configurable so that you can have it your way and the rest of us have it our way? How hard could that be?

Some of us just aren't as perfect as you obviously think you are At least we are big enough to admit it

FWIW, while I was looking into custom coding the Closing of the Windows & Sunroof, and Folding the Mirrors from the Key Fob, and a few other things, I discovered that the CAS Module, at least in CA (Comfort Access) equipped cars can be coded so that the doors unlock when the engine is stopped when the Start/Stop button is pushed, and allows a single pull to open the doors. I am pretty sure it will also work for non CA equipped cars as well. So, if you know someone who can code an F-Series car, this could be done.

GM and ALL other manufacturers have the best solution, shut the car off and the accessories shut off when you leave the car. The worst part is that it is not a two step process. You have to press the stop button, take your foot of the brake and then press the stop again. Show me one person who has never driven a BMW who gets it right the first FEW times. I still restart the car sometimes. Only a diehard BMW fanatic would accept it.
Ok so... you hit the lock button on the car to unlock the doors. I don't let passengers leave my vehicle until I do that...it might hurt the car's feelings.

So far as the acc position, the other manufacturers like GM, have the acc turn off when you open the door b/c it is a cheap solution. You can turn both off if your foot is off the brake when you turn the engine off, you don't need your foot on the brake. Tell me how that works out. Also even if you don't lock the car, the acc position should shut off after 15 minutes, unless they have changed this.

Maybe they changed it since 06, but doesn't press and hold turn everything off?

On our 06-330i with comfort access, we can press and release once to keep the "accessory" selection on, or press - hold (2-3 sec) - release and it all turns off.

As for locking your car in the garage, we do it because of the same reason we lock the door between the door between the garage and house...it's a barrier. A determined thief can still get in, but why make it easy? Also, I have found that you are less likely to leave it unlocked if you get in the habbit of locking it all the time.

That said, to each their own. Let me know if the press and hold thing works.

Nope, press and hold is gone. No you need to press once, remove foot from brake and press again to shut off the car.
