What do I ask the tint guys?

Hey all, I find my car gets pretty hot. My S550 and A8 seem to have had low tint. Either way I am looking to go as subtle and tasteful as possible on a black exterior and my goal is to decrease heat and not to enhance look. I have never put tint on a car so I'd love to hear what % (I am in Ohio) and color would you all recommend? Thanks

I'm putting 50% Huper Optik film on my car Monday, will post pictures after. I have issues with night vision, so 50% is pretty light, but with the higher tech ceramic films lighter tint still has great heat rejection.

A far as what I've learned in my shopping.....

- You can go with metallic films for cheap ($200ish?), but metallic film could interfere with electronic/nav signals. However, some claim not to have issues.

- Ceramic film is more expensive ($350-500), but you can go lighter, and still get equal or greater heat rejection than darker metallic films.

If you don't want a change in look, I would say go with a ceramic film such as 3m Crystallline, Formula1 Pinnacle, Huper Optik, etc, in a shade 40-70%.

Installer is pretty critical, especially if you have rear sunshades. Make sure you get someone who has done a late model BMW with the sunshades and knows what they're up against. You don't want to be the car they use to figure it out.... I would not shop on price, get the installer you feel most comfortable with.

I know exactly what you mean. Everyone tried to dissuade me from 50% tint, stating it would be a waste, as it would be too light, but I cannot stress enough how happy I am with the results! Not sure of the type of film applied, but went through the dealer for peace of mind, at a cost of $500.00. I have the Amaro Brown interior and the best way to describe the look is that it is dark enough to tell that the windows are tinted, but light enough that you can readily see through / in from the outside; very very elegant, and I like the added security at night. Too bad BMW hasn't entertained the lght blue or green tint of Mercedes-Benz AMG models, which I love and, from what I understand, improve clarity when looking out.

I paid a little over 220 for ceramic, which cuts almost all of the UV. Non-ceramic would have been about 30 less. Not sure what brand I have, but it looks and feels okay to me. I had non-ceramic 20 on my last 7 and liked the way it looked better, but it was a little too dark at night time. Didn't have a backup cam on that one so it was a hassle sometimes.

BTW I think almost any darkness ceramic cuts almost 99% of UV radiation and keeps it cool inside, they just block varying degrees of visible light.

Wondering if you guys think it's worth it for me to tint my glass. I live in New York State where you must let 70% of light pass through. I don't want any hassles with law enforcement. I'd want to be legal. But would it be a waste of $$$ for such a light tint?

I heard they're pretty tough out there. 50% isn't all that noticeable though. You could do 50 rear 3 windows, 70 front two and it'd make some difference.

I have a real hatred for these tint laws. Having tint makes for a much more enjoyable driving experience. Whenever I have loaner cars I realize how much more distracting it is when all of the glare from the sun is in your eyes. I feel that driving with sunglasses obscures your vision more than light tint on the side windows would. California doesn't allow any tint on your front windows, but I've had it on my past 4 cars out here with little problem. All of my vehicles have had out of state registration and plates though, and I think that's helped me out. I also put my front windows down whenever I'm passing any cops. I know alot of people that have gotten tickets out here for it, though.

Just took my car to a place that's been in business for 20 years, this was the first time they tinted an F01 and said they could not do it. There is a gap on the rear windows of about 2-3 inches where there is a black panel that's covering part of the window. They said it would be difficult to do correctly. Has anyone else been told this?

Mine made a comment about how more dis assembly was required to put tint on an F01 compared to an E65 I brought in there a while before. I watched them do it and they didn't seem to have any trouble with it.

Hmm, I wonder if it's possible to just pull that panel off, I'll try it. Thanks!

Thank you all for the info. I will go with ceramic at 50%. My other question has to do with color. Do ceramic tint products come in different colors (I have noticed gray, mirrored and blue) and what looks good on a black car?

I'd rather have had black tint like my previous metallic was, but yeah for some reason ceramic always has some kind of color to it. The tint I have now is slightly blue but it's not always apparent.

I have a neighbor with a bluish (dark, navy maybe) tint. Don't love it. So the question is are ceramics all the same color?

Thanks all. I found a local guy who has done several F01/F02 cars. Sound like a process compared to a typical car. He told me it takes twice as long. Will probably use 3M 50% and the price is $400.

30% all around, love it. You can see out clearly. This pic has the inside shades up so it looks darker from outside
