X5 2005 - Whining/Humming noise

Morning all,
I've recently bought an X5 Diesel and when driving at a steady speed, you can hear a noise more humming than whining from the front wheels (I believe). I've had the front & rear discs&pads changed (which needed a change anyway) but I can't work out the noise. Thought it was the wheel bearing but when the car is jacked up and the wheel is spun, there's no noise,so don't want to open up the wheel bearing in case it's not that as I will then have to replace it. The only other thing I thought it could be is the tyres,so I asked a friend if I could swap the front wheels from his X5 to see if it makes a difference, but to my surprise his car is making the same noise. ANY IDEA WHAT THIS PROBLEM MIGHT BE?? Any advice would be appreciated.
