Looking for crazy ideas for used car purchase

For those interested in brainstorming used sports car purchases...

My original dilema was "Wife needs new car in $25K range, what should we get". I may be losing my mind here, but I'm starting to wonder if I should give her my 330i, and I could pick out a USED car in the ballpark of $25K.

Interestingly, my personal situation is such that:

- I seem to be craving more sportiness, and less luxury
- I commute only 8 miles to work each way, so I don't need a comfortable highway cruiser
- Reliability is actually of *relatively* low importance (I have a job where it doesn't really matter if I'm late, and if the car is in the shop, my wife can drop me off on her way to work)
- Any long trips we always go on together, so we could take her car.
- I hope to start auto-x'ing this summer

SO... Doing a quick search on autotrader, I'm realizing that $25K can get me a wide range of 97-99 Porsch boxters, for example. Hmmm. Or even a 1990 Porsche 911.

Would you consider doing something crazy like this if you were in my situation? Or would you just keep the 330i and let the wife have the Accord that she has wanted from the beginning?

Of course, maintence costs are a factor and I'm not particualrly mechanically inclined, but I am enjoying learning this stuff on the BMW and I would do whatever DIY I could learn. $25K is well within budged so "reasonable" maintence is not a problem, but crazy expenses (like a $600 oil change) would probably be a deal killer.

The 330i would become the wife's daily driver, and our "family" car. The only thing that bugs me is that she doesn't give a hoot about cars, so in retrospect I should have gotten a 325 if I knew this plan was going to happen. That would have given me $5K more to put into MY car.

If you really want to chuck all practicality out of the window, go with a Beck 550 Spyder. www.chuckbeckmotorsports.com.

I've fantasized about this car for some time and I will have one eventually. It will probably be my first second car.

supra TT will be very hard to find, let alone in good shape, let alone 6sp manual, for under 30k though.

There is something to be said about a car under warranty. I almost sold my E36 M3 to get a Mitsu Evo 8. The payments on the Evo 8 would have been 50-100% more than what I am paying on the E36 (bought it used a year ago). I couldn't justify that.

However, if I was looking for a new car in that price range....I would seriously consider an Evo 8.

Here are my current thoughts.

'88-91 Porsch 911: maintenance costs scare me

'93-95 Toyota Supra: Hmm. Maybe. But somehow seems wrong. A little to ricey maybe?

'97-99 Porsch Boxter: Not a big convertable fan.

Used '04 Mazda RX8 I'm actually considering this. The styling might be a TAD too much for me, and sucking gas without providing any torque is somewhat annoying. But at least I'd stop posting here about wishing I had a LSD.

First things first: Porsche has an "e" on the end.

I too would be worried about maintenance / service costs on the Porsche. I know that there is a certified pre-owned program but I wonder if there is some sort of pre-paid maintenance like BMW is offering.

I have a feeling that I'd miss the refined driving experience and luxury of my 330i if I went for something significantly sportier.

Yeah, I know. I don't know why I typed it like that.

yeah, I'm a little worried about that too. But I've come back to the idea several times now, so there's only so many times that can happen before you need to make a move.

Here's a nice dark blue 2000 Corvette for me: http://autotrader.com/findacar/image...cord=76***main Ooops. Already sold.

Hmmm.

No offense to any owners, but I always thought the coupes were pretty fugly. Maybe it would grow on me if I like how it drives though.

You'd be hard pressed to get an S54 MZ3 for that kind of money. But an S52 Coupe or Roadster is doable.

A new WRX is also in the $25K range. Any you can justify it because of 4 wheel drive for those days when conditions aren't so great.

It might be predictable, but you can get a mint condition, low-mileage E36 M3 for that price.
