As just one example, here's the route we took to Chuckwalla Valley Raceway where the San Diego BMW CCA Chapter had their annual High Performance Driving School this past weekend:

You can see one particularly butt-puckering section of CA 74 on the left hand side coming down into Palm Desert.
I grew up in SoCal and can totally agree with you. I always enjoyed all the ways down the mountain from Big Bear Lake - Hwy 18, Hwys 18 and 330 or Hwy 38.

This is a really, really, really bad way to control your speed...especially at high cornering speeds where you are near the limit of traction of your tires. Doing this relies on your rear drive wheels to control your speed, not your front brakes. This is the most unstable way to control your speed and is the reason why front brake bias is so important in car dynamics. If you have rear brake bias, the rear wheels lock up (lose traction) before the fronts, i.e. losing grip. This makes the car very unstable and prone to oversteer and spin. This does not occur when the front wheels lock up (lose traction), the rear wheels still have traction and grip, keeping the car straight, or causing the car to undertsteer...a much more controllable/stable condition.

If you do not get revs matched to the wheels, either too slow, or too fast, you run the risk of overspinning or underspinning the wheels and affecting traction. If you undermatch the engine/wheels, you will cause the car to slow (i.e. brake) and move the weight of the car more onto the front wheels, thus reducing the load on the rear and subsequently reducing the grip capacity of the tire - this will exacerbate the situation. In a straight line, or low demand corners, you will feel nothing other than the weight move about. In a high speed corner where you are using a lot of the grip capacity of the tire laterally, a change in drive on the wheels from a mis-matched engagement of the engine with the clutch could exceed the grip capacity of the wheels and cause oversteer and probably a spin. The instinct of braking would only make this oversteer worse and probably guarantee a spin due to even more unloading of the rear wheel.

Your favourite spot might also be your lucky spot too!

[/Lecture]

Please use your brakes/throttle in the future to control your speed! Who else is going to do our science experiments?

+1

What you are describing is called Trailing Cluch Oversteer (TCO). Using the transmission to control speed in a curve is a very bad idea.

Just glad I'm not going back to Ft Polk..those roads DAMAGE vehicles. Before I left I did a petition with over 500 signatures, asking the Garrison to fix the roads. I included a consolidated cost/saving estimate as well. Unfortunately the GVT cares more about saving their own money than the individuals that serve it. Off post was no better
