Speedometer

I have an 88 528e. The speedometer only works when it wants to. Sometimes it will work sometimes it wont. Also sometimes i will go from 0 spike up to speed then cut out again. Not sure what the issue is can anybody help?

speed sensor in the back of the rear differential usually goes bad. ohm test it if it in the proper resistance values. check your bently book

If the above doesn't help then try replacing the decades old, plastic cogs within the gauge assembly.

Pretty easy job, I've done it on my old E30 and about to tackle on my E28. Just go easy and don't break anything.

$17 will hopefully see you with a better and working speedo.

Looks like I am in need of those gears for my newly acquired 84 533i from my friend's barn.

Are the cluster difficult to remove from the dash ?
