328i or m3

I just bought a 328i for $2500. My plan was to supercharge and strip out the interior make it kind of a fun little race car for messing around. Needs rust repair in the rear quarter panels and rocker panels. And most of the car needs to be repainted. i found repair panels online for the rust but im wondering if its worth it to be that extent of a restoration. Or if i should just clean it up the best i can with polish and and little bondo(worst case) and sell it off and look for one in better shape? Opionions?

You're kinda in a tough spot, either you kinda fix it up and hope to get your money back, or you go all out and fix it for whatever the cost to get it to where it needs to be. Either way youre not gonna end up rich in the deal. First thing to remember you can't Polish a turd, and even if you do, its still a turd. Second there is no such thing as a cheap Bimmer. I bought mine for 3400, and ive already spent nearly a grand just catching it up on maintenance. Throw in whatever im going spend on fixing the abs light, a new antenna base and a used top lid motor, and I'm 5 plus. And thats not including what may pop up. An m3 in good shape will start at least where I finish, and go up from there with expenses.

Ya im thinking if i want to do any kind of major performance work. its going to be a good idea to start out with a good rust free m3. When i bought it i hadnt taken a good enough look at the rust because i bought it from a friend and i trusted him but oh well. I think im going to start tearing it apart and see what im up against it nothing at ill know the e36 inside and out and have a great parts car when i buy my next one.

QFT. I paid $8300 for mine needing suspension overhaul 3.5 years ago in Calgary.

If BMWs cost that much in Canada you did not get screwed. If you have a compressor painting your car is only going to cost about $700. You do not need to replace the rusted panels you just need to sand out the rust and full the dent with Bondo. You said that you want to make your car a fun little racer so while you paint it you could put a cool design on it. You could use the BMW racing colors to make it look like a real racecar or any other design you can think of your imagination is the limt.

I used Photoshop to give you an idea what your car would look like with the racing colors.

It just depends on location. Where I live here in BFE Idaho BMWs go for a lot more than they do just a few hours away in Portland or Seattle. I paid top dollar KBB retail ($8k) for mine and still feel I got a good car and a good deal for the money.
