active steering warring plz help

hey i just got this 05 545i from an auction it has 89k miles on it when i had my brother go pick it up for me they had to jump start it then it died after he drove about 500 yards off the lot i think they might have shocked the computor? i had my friend work on it he did the breaks replaced collent hose, flushed radiatior and toped off the hydraulic powersteering fluid, put new belts in it and a new battery in it. but when ever i start it it has a kinda rough idle to it and a active steering waring comes on and the passeger airbag warning aswell other than that it runs good and turns fine other than the steering being a little stiff this is my first bmw ive been told that all their steering is a little stiff. anyways i took the car to a bmw shop in my area and they said they couldnt completely get in to the computer due to sensor problem and they said it would be 1200$ for the sensor in the steering wheel ive been researching it and ive been coming up with a steering angle sensor does this sound right? or has anyone encountered this problem?

Use the Search function for "SZL failure", "Angle sensor failure", "SZL module". There are many posts regarding your issue and if you have a mechanically inclined friend you can lick this issue for less than 5% of what was quoted.

Start with the below link:

Could this be the reason for the rough idling?

Think about it...

Blinkers won't extinguish because the computer has no idea where the steering wheel is. Thus, it cannot utilize the auto-extinguish function through the steering wheel position alone. The computer has no idea where the steering wheel is because the _________ (3 words) is malfunctioning.

There are many other items in the stability control system that can cause the warning also, but the ___________ (3 words) is one of the most common causes. After fixing this problem, the active steering warning will most likely go away, but there is a chance there are other problems too.

Try www.realoem.com for parts and part numbers, and http://tis.spaghetticoder.org/e60/ for DIY's.

You will find that one error may effect other systems as well so it may be necessary for one problem to be fixed in order for programming to work on something else. I hope you did your homework before jumping into an auctioned e60.

Since you are new to this forum, the other seasoned members should have just filled you in on forum etiquette such as coherent sentences and searching thoroughly prior to posting... but evidently someone didn't feed the animals...

Here are the OEM part numbers. The MT one is $50ish, the AT one is mid $200s.

For MT you need: 32306765857
For AT you need: 32306765858

As ChelseaFC stated, learn how to post- you're asking for free advice, and doing so quite rudely. Let me guess- You're trying to get this thing half presentable so you can sell it, right?

If you followed the link I gave you and read a little, you would have found the attached including the fact that you can repair that steering angle sensor issue by using a repair kit with the necessary optical element.

http://bmwpartssource.com/parts/inde...&siteid=216042

You can use the spaghetticoder link instruction to remove the necessary parts to get to it and then follow the attached SIB. No programming required.

How bad would it be to drive it with that sensor being bad I have to go back home it's a 1300 miles away every thing seems to be fine other than the active steering and rough idle I plan on fixing it as soon as I get home..

If its only the steering angle sensor that's triggering the A/S warning, the only functionality you are losing (aside of the turn signal auto shut-off) is the increased steering ratio at lower speeds.

Don't know what causing the rough idle, but from a handling perspective you should be fine to drive it.

Nube1: I cannot get the link for the repair kit to work nor can I find it on their website. That's the route I would prefer to go here.

Has anyone been able to make this repair using that kit? Any help in me finding one would be appreciated.
