Look what fell out of oil access panel

Hello Fellow Bimmers
I was doing an oil change on my 2007 650i yesterday. When I took off the access panel, this spring fell out. It is 3/8" long but looks like it broke, and 1/4" in dia. Any clue to what it goes to?
Any help will be greatly appreciated

Yikes, you never want loose parts falling out of your car when you open it up!

I hope someone can help to figure this out for you.

You can search for key words in the ETK parts program, so I entered "spring", and looked at a pile of springs. The only ones remotely close to that spring are parking brake shoe springs, brake pedal return spring and an internal camshaft spring.

Based on the ETK results I would guess you picked that spring up off the road (though the front grill) and it got stuck in your undertray.

To be honest I really miss the 6 series, the BMW main dealer actually sold the car off the forecourt because their words 'It was in brilliant condition for a 7 year old car' they normally send them straight to auction, they then told me they sold it in quick time...... (darn't ask how much they made on it?).
Having said this the new Z4 is a 3.0ltr, not the turbo charged one, (which has the power to match the 6 series) but she is quick enough, but eminently more flickable than the '6'. I love the hard top which comes down as soon as the rain stops, which is what I missed with the '6'.
It was owned by BMW and stored for months so has very low mileage for an 18month old car. It is very highly specd, in fact very little one can add to it, but I have added some small things.....just waiting delivery of a glass wind deflector from Germany.
I specifically picked this model as it is bullet proof in all areas, I did lots of checking...... hence not taking the turbo charged version.
But like most things they grow on you and I am learning with this one...
