ebay.com

they are copys of the obnoxiously overpriced, mass produced chips the big name brands sell. they just dont have the obnoxious price tag on them.

You're talking 5 figures minimum for that.
If you don't know what it is, you cant afford it. What is your budget. If its $68 for a "chip" then eBay chips are fine.

I do not know much of the M20 aftermarket perfomance gain, i dont have one, I have an M50 Vanos, and i hvent gotten my E30 yet.

The S52 is the motor from 96-99 M3s. The motor alone is expensive $3,000 and up for a good running example, and then to make it all work in your car is all that much more expensive. and then a decent turbo build on top of that as if you were turboing an M3, which is what it is. If you got the scratch and the time go for it, if you dont have that much a simple 24V swap would be enough, you can find decent M50s for under $1,000 and they're already OBD1, just a 413 red label ecu and the harness...

5 figures ... no. more like 6-9 grand depending on how far you go with it. thats with proper parts and proper tuning. you could cheap out and build a crappy setup for less.

there really isnt anything much you can do to an m20 to raise its performance that much. e34 boy would know that if he belonged in this section. they are good, reliable well performing cars, they are NOT race cars. unless of course you are racing in spec e30 or modding the car with lots of cash.

No, they are not, actually. I have read and saved the files off of all the major chips and have had customer's cars come in the shop with ebay chips and they are not like any of the others, nor as good - they only advance the timing a couple degrees and add a tiny bit of fuel.

Bets shelf-tunes I have seen (as close as we get with live tuning) is JimC and MarkD. The rest only change the WOT maps.

okay this is a lot to take in haha. gives me lots to think about. i am finishing a datsun 280z project currently so i am not planning on doing any major jobs until that is done. also i do not understand all the things you guys are saying. i dont know all the different engines. but that s50 swap seems like it might be good. but also the m3 swap seems awesome. i guess i will just have to wait and see
thanks for all the help and opinions

MarkD has been trying to take legal action against the ebay seller i buy my chips from for a long time .. because his chips are an exact copy of Mark's.

if Mark says they are an exact copy, i believe him.

A turbo S52 E30 build would easily get over $10,000

And i'm in this section because im picking up my E30 this weekend.

if you're paying for an overpriced shop to do all of the work, sure .. but if you're paying a shop to do a swap, even just an m50 can run you over 5k.

for parts and you doing all the work yourself, no, an s52 turbo wont run you over 10k. not by a long shot.
