Stev, if this is just about "one upping" the wife's friend then go whole hog and get your wife a Cayenne S -- that should take care of the "one upping" around the beltway for a bit.

The X5 loaners at my dealer are predominately 35d. Great engine; have spent a few good weekends with a diesel loaner. Can't believe that the take rate is so low on the oil burners. Only 18% of X5 sales in 2011 were compression ignition according to Car and Driver latest issue!?!?

See attached photo . . . didn't realize how comfortable these seats were until after we got our X5. Dealer didn't have a X5 on the lot with these seats, so checked it on a 7 series, wife liked it and we ordered it.

Go for this . . . and your wife will not only blow her friend away, but the entire town too! And that E93 with the top down will feel like loaner!

Must be diff't down there. Where I live, the diesels are pretty hard to come by. They don't last on lots. My dealer always has a handful of petrol models, but the diesels never stay. They are always sold very quickly.

I wouldn't say it's not BMW like because BMW has been building diesels for ages. I agree though, it's not gonna be for everybody. I think the diesel is right at home in the X, but I don't think I'd want one in a 3-series. I'd definitely like to see one made available in the F10 5-series, but it looks like they're going for a 535i Hybrid instead.

If those are US sales stats, that's actually a pretty significant take rate! At least good enough to justify its continued existence here for the next-gen X5 which is right around the corner I guess. I bet there's more X5d's than 50i's out there.

Many must agree with you. C&D reports a 4% take rate for the 3 series with Rudolf's creation under the hood.

I don't know -- I had my M3 in for service and was given a 335d for the day. I really enjoyed driving the car. I don't see why it wouldn't be a great choice for many/most 3 series drivers.

It seems as though I'm seeing a lot more VW TDI sedans around...

Both you and your wife will love the diesel. My wife loves her D w/her "snowflake wheels" (214s in man-speak!)

BTW, look at what my dealer just offered us this past weekend for an extended test drive (4-days)...We had a great time down the Cheasapeake Bay. Looks right at home, doesn't it

It would be a fine choice. It's subjective though in what your preferences are and what you're looking for, how you see a particular car, and what you're looking to get out of it as far as the experience. There's not really a right or wrong answer either way, just comes down to preferences.
