2010 vs. 2011 335d

I've been surprised at how few 2010s I've encountered as I look for a 335d. Were the numbers of 2010 335d's relatively low?

Some of the 2010's, though, looked pretty nice.

Are there any major changes between the model years such that the 2011 is a markedly better car to consider?

Thanks again.

There is no difference AFAIK, in any model year of 335d.

I own a late 2011 and owned a 2009. There is only one small difference, and that is the climate control console. All the same function, just configured differently.

BTW, for some reason, my 2011 is a quicker car. Must be variability within the manufacturing process.

The base radio in the 2010 cars sucks. They maybe changed it later in that year but it was such a big complaint that I know by 2011 MY they switched back to the nicer radio. So unless you are looking at cars with upgraded stereo options then I'd just look at 2009 and 2011 ones. I personally like that the 2009 still has the Rest feature that ended on the 3 series after that MY. But if I were shopping a 335d today then I'd probably focus on M-Sport packaged cars and those did not exist in 2009.

Only 2011.5 (post 09/10 production) have the hifi as a stock radio

Also 2011 was a longer production run while awaiting the F30, hence the greater numbers

For what it is worth the 2009 was also the last of pre wired cars for alarms. But that is only a perk of you want the factory alarm and car was not ordered with it.

All I know is I have had both 2010 and 2011 loaners and the sound quality was obviously different. The 2010 had less speakers which was also an obvious difference. The 2011 to my ears was like my 2009. As for build dates and if HiFi that I have no clue on. I'd not be happy with the base stereo in a 2010.

Are there any visual cues to identify if a car has the base radio or an upgraded one? If the car is hundreds of miles away, it's not as though you can readily listen to the radio to determine if it's the base model or not.

When researching online, the photos appear to be the best source of information. The provided descriptions aren't always all that valuable. For example, when "Options" list things like "Console" and "Dual Exhaust" and "Drivers Airbag" ...

In regards to finding out options, if the car is at a BMW used car lot then they should easily be able to provide a true list of options.

2010's are actually kind of rare. they were limited in production because 2011's started early (03/10) if my memory serves me correctly.

That is interesting but I doubt it. What are the last seven oif your VIN? Are you sure you are a 5/09 build?

See: http://www.shopbmwusa.com/ProductDet...s&ProductId=62

"For vehicles produced up to 02/09"

Not sure how your 5/09 would have pre-wiring whe BMW clearly stopped it as of March 2009. See BMW attachment to bulletin SI B00 13 09

My car was ordered by dealer and I am not sure what all they specifically ordered. Before buying I ran VIN for list of options and it had 5GA PREP. ANTI-THEFT ALARM SYSTEM. I am assumed that to be pre-wiring. So its possible dealer specifically ordered for it.
Also dealer quoted $400 for installing alarm which is in sync with cost of alarm without wiring. I skipped it because I wasnt using key because of CA.

There are quite a few differences due to 'decontenting' that happened in 2010. The 2009 cars have seat-back netting, a covered, illuminated ashtray/lighter (versus an open bin) and the trunk has hooks for tie downs. I seem to recall that the under-hood pad was removed in later models, but I don't think this applied to the diesels.

As was mentioned, the 'heat at rest' button got replaced with an 'all' button, which couples together the passenger and driver temperature controls. Even though I don't use it often, I prefer having the the heat at rest. The 'all' button may be more convenient in day-to-day use, but it duplicates something that can be done manually whereas the heat at rest fuction is a unique feature (as far as I know).

As Snipe and others mentioned, the stereo got downgraded in 2010 - apparently it caused so many complaints that BMW reinstated the nicer stereo. The alarm pre-wiring was discontinued... maybe there are one or two other differences.

Anyway, the 2010 decontenting topic has been discussed quite a bit in the main E90 forum, if anyone wants more specifics.

As far as options added, I don't think the M-Sport package was available in the earlier models.

The "Rest" can't be done in the later cars. There was a discussion about it awhile back. Something to do with the extra pump needed for the feature is no longer physically in the cars. I do not live in a cold climate but really do like this feature in my 2009. I'd imagine if I lived in a colder climate it would be a feature that I'd love.

The M-Sport was not available in 2009, I forget when exactly it was introduced. I really like the look of the cars with this package and probably would be high up on my want list if I were shopping for a used 335d.

Mine was a 2010...and the upgraded stereo is huge. The Harmon Kardon doesn't compare to the Premium Sound that you could get on the 2010's.

M-Sport wasn't available on the 2010's, either. Only available on the 2011's from the factory.
