Front cup holders (supposedly)

I just finished using my t-shirt to clean up the soda from my front cup holder; the soda fell on its side as I gently stopped the car at a red light. Okay, I'm used to BMW's bad cup holders but the front cup holders in my 750i shouldn't be called cup holders at all. It is a rectangular storage compartment with the shallow outline of what could be two cups. I read through the owner's manual and searched online without any luck. I can't imagine that anyone could use this compartment to hold a beverage unless it is sealed and on its side.

Is there some secret to securing the beverages in this compartment?

Sounds like you're missing a part. Mine has two cylindrical sections with mechanical grippers within this area.

Mine definitely does not have this. It is just an empty space. I tried to find pictures of how it should look in the owners manual and online and couldn't find any relevant pictures.

You should contact your dealer. My 7 also came equipped with the removable 2-cup insert for this space.

You are missing the part.

Yep mine to has the holders and they work great with coffee and soda cups.

Thanks, I am relieved to know that this was the dealers fault and not some design omission. I'm contacting the dealership today. Luckily, I don't fill out their survey's for a few weeks after buying, so I'm sure they will be helpful.

I had this issue with my F01, I found them in the glovebox and clicked them in. Not sure why they had not installed them, just forgot I expect. Worth a check though.

Thanks to everyone for replying. The dealership said that when the cars come from the factory, sometimes the removable components are kept in various storage compartments. I found it in one of them and snapped it in without any problem. I think it will work great. Thanks again.

They should have done this as part of the dealer prep ... sloppy work for an $80K+ car! Be sure to ding them in the review.

Just out of curiosity, which dealership was responsible for this mess?

I just got my new 2012 750LI sport...My third '7.

Only this one now has 'custom coffee interior'. as an entire Venti Bold coffee exploded on turn 1.

The car literally has 47 miles on it....Not cool with the cup holders.

I need to find out where the 'rubbery holder mechanisms' are that snap into that horrible little square.

If anyone has a picture of the cup holder mechanism part and could post or send, I would appreciate it.

Grande cup is pretty secure, with a Venti cup you may have to hold the cup while making a turn

Seriously - its like nobody gives a f*** anymore!

You could make an argument that even with the insert you really don't have cup holders. They are very shallow and block the knobs in front there. I just filled out the jdpower survey on my new 2012 750li and the only two real complaints I had were the cup holders and the sun visor (i'm tall and the visor isn't long enough to block the sun where I have the seat positioned).

I found another cup holder clip in my glove compartment, where is that one clip too?

BTW, I would be really pissed if it happens to me. Go and complaint to the dealer!
