Neuschwanstein Castel Refurbishment

Just returned home after a 3 week trip to Germany and Italy. We stopped by Schwangau and toured Neuschwanstein. In case anyone tries to get a photo during an ED be advised the entire front and one side of the castle is covered with scaffolding. See picture. Tours are still being conducted during the repairs.

It's been like this for about 7-8 months and is expected to continue well into 2013.

I am planning to visit it on my way to Fussen at the end of this month. Is it still worth going there or should I scrap the plan all together?

In my opinion the only reason to go to Fussen is to see the castles. I think it's definitely worth going, especially if you do the tour of Hohenschwangau.

Still worth the trip. Be toured both Neu and Hohen while we were there. Sure you don't get the full majesty of Neu but the castle is still pretty darn impressive. Really it is a palace not so much a castle.

We stopped at Burghausen and Salzburg. Those are castles built for defense. Neushwanstein, Hohenshwangau and Schonnbrunn are all palaces built for luxury and ostentation.

Both types are fun to visit.

Considering the exterior (and the view) is the only thing worth seeing at neuschwanstein why go when it's covered in scaffolding? I'd skip it and go to Linderhof or Hohenshwangau instead.

I would say it is still worth a visit. If you don't care about the tour you can still get a nice clean castle photo from the opposite side from high bridge. You need to hike up a bit, but it is well worth it.

For tour, Hohenshwangau tour is much more interesting since it has many artifacts and interesting facts regarding Ludwig's family.

When I visited parking was 5 euros all day, tour was 23 euros if you get both at the same time (another euro off if you are staying the area).

Considering Ludwig never finished it, it may be a real looooooooong time until work is finished.

I guess I will go there and check it out both. What am I going to do in Fussen all afternoon anyways. My Plan is to drive from Munich to Fussen and on my way visit Wieskirche and Castles. Linderhof is out my planned route hence I am going to skip it.

Personally, I like Herrenchiemsee the best of all of Ludwig's castles. You can see the difference between the finished portion and the unfinished. Also, the boat ride to the island of Herreninsel can be nice if the weather cooperates.

For those of you not very familiar with how they do things here in Germany...it will probably be done between 6mo from now and ohhh NEVER. #constructionthatnevergetsdoneEVEReverywhere
