good and bad BMW mechanics in Houston area
It has been asked here several times but last post is 2 years old, so here we go again:
I'm looking for good indy shop to repair/maintain our two BMWs. I am in West U. area but willing to drive up to 50 miles to a good shop. So far I had absolute disater with two places I've tried. One left me stranded twice within two days after they serviced my car, another is apparently good but charges close to the car market value (and my oldest bimmer just turned 7 years!) for routine service and simple repairs: e.g. they asked 6.4K for 100K service which is tun-up + all fluids + cooling system replacement! Please post your suggestions - good repair shops as well as places to avoid! |

Was wondering the same thing, I have a 2008 328i with 82k mile. Need to find a Good & fairly priced Indy. I'm on the North side and have recieved some prices on this side of town that were to high. (ex . Replace starter 850$). If you have found a good Indy please post it. Thanks & brgds.

Just to clarify my point - I won't mind paying reasonable hourly rate, as long as number of hours stay reasonable. By reasonable I mean ~ $100 per hour. Unfortunately with the quotes of 19 hours for tune-up I can't help but start wandering if mechanic will be practicing "leaving statute" art while doing repairs on the car.

Texas German Autohaus.
Ask for Hans. Bus: (713) 850-8282 E-mail: hans@t-g-a.com Edloe near Richmond. Not the cheapest in town. But high quality and very practical about what does or does not need to be done.

Texas German Autohaus: unfortunately they seems to have quality control issue in their shop. They left me stranded twice in 1.5 years, and a few of current of repairs is strictly due to their negligence. First time they pinched the O-ring while changing oil. I drove away and in 4 days had lost 2 quarts of oil. I called them right after low oil sensor gave a warning. They said - keep driving, it is probably faulty oil sensor. I kept driving for 2 more days until I got red warning of sever oil loss. I don't know how much harm I did to the engine in those 4 days and 50 miles. TGA did recognized their fault and performed repairs for free.
Second time they performed a repair on cooling fan and forgot to tighten associated wiring. Same week I drove out of town and on my way back the fan got immobilized and engine overheated. Fortunately I was able to fix it and drove back on my own and to the shop. They did repair it for free, again. Third thing is that they never check your car unless you ask specifically for inspection. One of control arms was cracked and a tire on one side was warn much more than the other - they did not bother to tell me anything. Needless to say, I am not very eager to return to them. Otherwise they are good: fairly priced and seem to know what they are doing. TGA never push for unnecessary repairs. I was using them for 1.5 years, and would continue if not those 3 cases within such a short interval. Now I got 2 severe leaks developed in the engine in the course of half a year and not sure if it is a result of overheat or just car age and millage (94K and 7 years). |

We used these guys based on a recommendation from a neighbor (Z3). Just simple main't type stuff. The owner was (it's been 3+ yrs since our last visit, sold the E46 Touring) pretty fanatical about main't.
http://www.bavarianmachine.com/ These guys are right down the street from the house. They did a head gasket repair on the E46 just before we sold it. Lots of Euro exotics there. http://www.eurocarwerk.com/ My try posting on the BMW CCA Houston chapter site or see if there are any site sponsors. http://www.houston-bmwcca.com/portal/index.php |

I live in the clear lake area, so TGA is out of the question. I would waste a lot of time utilizing their services. I end up going to Advantage BMW. I know the SA by now, and he gives me a "senior citizen" discount, which means getting less rip off. But, I do get to sit on leather sofa, watch HD TV, wifi, coffee and slushies, all for free.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I am thinking about giving Eurocarwerk a try.
Re: Bavarian Machine Specialties - I did try them. On my first visit I paid ~ $100 for complete inspection - they found nothing wrong with my 2008 328i, but high miles, over 100K. Nevertheless they suggest i need to perform preventive maintenance/service II, etc., totaling $16K & taking 19 hours of labor! I pointed out that this estimate is above market value of the car( which was perfectly drive-able and still is, after almost 6 months and no service). I've also suspected labor time quote was a "little" off, and asked if I can observe how they do a couple of suggested items from the estimate. Needless to say, it was ultimate insult for them. Overall, I should say that they appear to know what they are talking about, but can not be trusted. If you decide to use them, watch out for needless repairs and service. The best might be to use them as a second opinion or for diagnostics and then do repairs somewhere else. |

Two places. Silvio's Autohaus in midtown, and Orion auto service in the heights. Been going to Silvio's for years, just found orion and they are closer to me.

Anyone know a good tint guy that they would trust their car to? I'm looking to stay in the Houston / Clear Lake area, but I'll drive anywhere in the area, really.

Driver Source on memorial. Ask for Mark. He works on mostly exotics, but know BMW, Audi, Porsche, etc etc. He does side work as well. We just changed the pesky alternator bracket gasket a couple weeks ago on my e66. They do more performance, but also do regular maintenance. At any given time, you'll find cars like the McLaren, f50, f40, gallardo, astons, and 1000whp 911s in the shop. I've known him 10 years and he does top notch work. I work on my car for the most part unless I need a lift..then I bring the car to him and help with repairs.

Thumbs up for Silvio. He has maintained my MkV GTI and W211 E class for a couple of years. I'm buying an E70 and he will also work on it when the factory free service ends. His shop is immaculate, he knows what he's doing, and he won't charge you for unnecessary work.
