Installing Aftermarket Cruise Contol

Hi. We recently purchased a 2004 X3 2.5. We checked it out and drove it and feel in love with it. At the time we bought it the dealer said it had cruise control. Not noticing if it did or not, I didn't think anything else about it until I went to use it. To my embarrassment, we didn't have it. I called the dealer and asked about it and he said the salesman and his paperwork were wrong and they'd put cruise control on it.

Has anybody had this done before? Is it possible to put an aftermarket cruise control on? I love the interior of this car and don't want it jacked up with a cheap part.

Thanks

Are you sure?? It may be in one of the steering wheel stalks....Surely a vehicle of this level comes with cruise standard! But maybe not, My '07 was $45k and no alarm or even a "chirp" when pushing the lock button on the remote--so ???

Why not retrofit the factory cruise control?

I did that on my Dodge Truck... Took me about half a day. Change the parts for the buttons on the steering wheel, bolt on the throttle servo and make a few wiring harness changes. The engine computer was already set up for cruise.

On an X3 it could be all they have to do is change to the multifunction steering wheel and reprogram the computer. That's just a guess. I've never done it on an X3.

The Multifunction steering wheel with cruise was a $475 option on the '05 X3 2.5i. It was part of the premium package and standard on the X3 3.0i. When BMW stopped importing the 2.5i into the US cruise and the multifunction wheel became standard.

Here is the '05 price list:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...41&postcount=1

Cars without cruise have a wheel without the buttons. I've never seen one but they are in the parts catalog.

www.realoem.com I believe has a section listing the parts/prices for retrofitting cruise control.

I just recently purchased a 2004 BMW X3 with cruise control but do not have a multifunction steering wheel to use the cruise control. I have the cruise control indicator that's located on the speedometer, so what's the deal. I checked the links provided here, but can't find anywhere to purchase a retro fitting multifunction steering wheel for my X3. What am I missing here? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

just because you have the indicator doesn't mean you have the control. If i looked carefully at the readout of the stereo on one of my bmw's (don't remember which one), it clearly showed TV as an option, but as we all know, TV isn't available in the US in our cars.

The part number is: 65710397861 for the steering wheel without automatic climate control. I'm not sure what (if any) additional parts are needed for the cruise control to actually work. Tischer BMW has it listed for $492. But as with all new steering wheel retrofits, you will likely need to purchase an airbag as well. Might as well upgrade/buy a sport steering wheel while you're at it, which includes cruise IIRC.

When I purchased my used 04 X3, it didn't have cruise. I had the dealer install it, and the bill was just under $500. They installed all the parts, including the multi-function steering wheel. And the Bonus: It includes the radio controls.

Thanks for all the help. The dealer is dragging his feet on this. Can anybody tell me what that option originally cost in 2004? I believe I'll just take it to the dealer and have them install it like goathog did. I like the sound of "retrofitting"

Cruise was included with the multi-function steering wheel, a $475 option.

We finally got the cruise control and multi function wheel installed. It looks and feels great. Thanks for all the help. The dealers had no idea what a retrofit kit was.

It doesn't look like it takes that much to install it. Almost like a plug and play setup. For some reason, they gave me the old steering wheel center with an airbag. So if anybody needs it, let me know.

Yep, we've got twins right down to the wheels. I think you've got a few more options and different interior.

Does anybody run VIN #s here? I'd like to know exactly what the vehicle has.

It's actually fairly easy to determine what options are present. If you have rails in the cargo area, then you have premium package. If you have headlamp washers, you have cold weather. If you have a projector low-beam bulb and a green LED next to the Auto headlight setting, you have xenons. If you have reflective piping on the seats, you have leather. PDC is self-explanatory.

What did you do?

I have the same problem. I bought 2004 BMW X3 2.5i and it does not have cruise control, I called local dealership and they said you can not get it installed.

He said there is no such retrofit kit availlable.

Can you guys tell me what you guys did to get it installed? Part number would be of great help, I can call the dealer and tell him the part number directly.

Appreciate your help!!

Found the part number

I Gave the part number 65710397861 to the dealer and he says it is a multifucntional steering wheel retro-fit, but that is not in stocks in the country, I see it is availlable on the internet.

Dealer said he will research on 65710397861 and fnd out if it will make cruise control to work...

Any idea on, are there any additional parts required(apart from this kit) to make cruise control work?
