"Ultra-luxury" hotel room rates approach $1000

The Wall Street Journal has a story on the move toward $1000 per night room rates (not necessarily suites) for "ultra-luxury" hotels. Among the Europen hotels mentioned are:

• Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on the French Riviera (high-season price: €750, or about $986)

• Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London (rates begin at about £735--$1,190)
  
• Ritz Paris (now about $960)
  
• Mandarin Oriental Paris (Entry-level room: about $1,175)
  
• Castello di Casole, about 45 minutes from Florence, Italy [entry-level suites for about $828 (€630) in low season, about $1,578 (€1,200) in high season]
  

Or you could just stop in the Lobby, read a paper and have drink in the bar and save a lot of money for almost the same experience.

Nice to see that the war on poverty is finally showing results.

This month's "Departures" has an article on the Hotel du Cap. I guess they have a major PR campaign underway.

Stayed at the Hotel du-Cap in 2001/June/ Paid around 500 Euro if remember correctly 1euro was about 1USD at that time- one of the best hotels i ever stayed in my life w pool on a cliff to dye for.
