My guess is that it is original and you have more than 100Kmi on it. Replace it and inspect other cooling components. They are not far behind.
Cooling is a "hot" topic for e39. There are plenty of threads to keep you covered.

I hear that sound again....tic tic tic tic.... sounds like a bomb ready to go off!!

Seriously, replace as much of it as you finances will allow. I thought I had done enough. Replaced the water pump, thermostat, expansion tank, heater valve and dealer replaced the radiator when I bought it with 77k on the meter. Car is now at 103k and otherwise runs great. Now, from everything I read, cooling system hoses are good for roughly 150k. Then last month another major failure, a hose, but it wasn't the upper radiator hose but the plastic fitting that connected it to the radiator. So, I replaced all hoses that were still original. I thought it was all buttoned up tight. Nothing more to go wrong with the cooling system. Within a week's time started seeing fluid collecting on the drivers side below the radiator. D@#*! What could it possibly be this time? Oh No, not the radiator again? Sure enough the seal on the plastic end cap was weeping. Bought a new Behr replacement from Bavauto and had it installed in two days. I couldn't believe that a new radiator would only last for 25k but once a inspected the replaced radiator I understood why it didn't last. It was a used one that the dealer bought from junk yard. I know because there are major differences between it and the new one I installed.

Sorry to ramble on but once one part of the cooling system starts to go, you're better off replacing as much as you can.

Age and mileage, compounded by environmental factors, cause cooling system failures. If you have over 100K miles, replace eveything mentioned previously, including belts and pulleys. The total parts cost is less than $750 for everything, but the reliability and peace of mind is priceless.

Agreed, Change as much of it as you can. It'll still be cheaper that an engine.. Fairly simple and will give you some peace of mind.

You are late to the "cooling system fiasco blowup party"...
But it is not too late yet.
STOP driving the car further, a new engine is expensive.

Search forum for:
- "cooling overhaul"
- "aioros"
- "Fudman"
- "bluebee"
- "cn90"

The bottom line: do a cooling overhaul.
Take your time to read through the forum.

PS: Reservoir: Dealer only
Fan Blade: dealer only.
Fan Clutch Sachs.

It is a complex topic re: which brand name for which part, so take your time to read through the forum.

Wow it think 2 days ago I warned you about the explosive cooling systems in these cars. I guess you learned the hard way even though there was really no time for you to do anything.
