New / Old travelogues - (1) Black Forest & Bavaria and (2) Austria

Someone has just posted a 10-minute, color travelogue featuring southern Germany from the 1930s at Internet Archive. Don't miss the comment about the "cleanliness and order of the villages".

And here is one about Austria, including soldiers marching to the 1914 War and the 1927 revolution.

Fascinating to see this, considering it was made 80 years ago.

I have been to every place mentioned in the film at least twice, except for the place the moderator purchased his cuckoo clock.

Yes, I was looking for you in the Austrian one (HA !).

The Internet Archive now has a major section of films in the PD, including both shorts and full-length. I started watching some during treatment, and I got hooked so I follow the new uploads list every week or so.

That's funny. I was looking for my grandfather (and I hadn't read this post, just your initial post, before viewing the Austria video).

Not quite a travelogue , but I just found "Here Is Germany". http://archive.org/details/HERE_IS_GERMANY This is Frank Capra's film for the US occupying troops, although never used for that purpose. It is essentially a decade later than the other films in this thread.

I have found two more old documentaries about Germany that may interest some of you, although they are basically the same. The first is "Your Job in Germany" and was produced by the U.S. Signal Corps in 1945. It is about 10-minutes long and filled with anti-German propaganda. Intriguingly, it was written by Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss).

The second version was produced by Warner Bros. after Jack Warner secured the rights to the material. This one has the catchy title "Hitler Lives". According to Wikipedia, it was released commercially in December 1945 and won an Academy Award in 1946 for best short documentary.

Both versions are on the Internet Archive, and there are links in the text above.

WOW...THANKS for a totally fascinating video!!!! I have to wonder at the reason (maybe the time period) for calling the Germans "peasants"? Did the rest of Europe consider Germany full of "peasants" or was it more of a cultural thing??
