E39 (1997 - 2003)
The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki

Mein Auto: BMW 1997 540i
'97 540i rough idle

had a P1175 code and installed new bosch plugs and boots plus fuel regulator sensor. ran fine then about 900 miles later the '97 540i idles rough not sure what to do next.

the engine light is still on so will check with my mechanic to see the code. do places like autozone also check for codes?

does the engine light blinks?, it might be a bad MAF

Yes. Autozone or advanced will check them.

Blinking light normally means a misfire is happening at that time.

Yep. That's the way it is supposed to work. It blinks during the misfire and then sets itself until cleared.

do you think i should try to clean the MAF first or build a new or rebuilt one? not sure what to do, this is the first BMW i have owned.

There is a relatively easy way to check the MAF-unplug it, restart the car and see if the idle improves. If it does, a good cleaning would be my first suggestion. If the idle is still bad, you have another problem.

The right way to approach this problem is to have the fault codes read. Guessing does not work. Please read your fault codes and report back!
