Purchased 2012 535 - a couple of questions before I ink deal think week

As always, thanks for the continued feedback and support - what a great group.

In no particular order, I have several questions before I ink the deal - some will be personal preference, but I would like to get your thought process if nothing else to help me through the deal.

*Should I get the tire warranty? It is a 535 with Sport, Auto - 275 45 19 rear and the 245 in the front. Houston - so my share of bad road conditions.
*Should I get the windshield warranty? My dad likes it, but I have always shyed away from it.
*I am having the windows tinted and they offer a ceramic tint. Does it really keep more of the heat out? Again, I am in Houston. Does it interfere with any reception?

That is all for now - more to come I am sure as I take delivery later this week.

Joey

Since you have the RWD, you will not get the bubble prone Goodyear LS2's. I'd pass on the tire warranty.

Pass on the windshield warranty. What does your insurance cover?

Hope you are not having the dealer tint the windows, or you're paying more than you need to. Ceramic performs about equivalent to metallic, you can research the UV index of different films on their manufacturer websites. Carbon does not interfere with reception, that is one of the benefits.

Congrats on the new car!

I have this set up and no insurance but I used to live in Houston (around Rice U) and remember how horrible the roads could be.

You might want to consider the wheel and tire insurance if you can get the dealer down to around $1,000 for 3 - 5 years which has been obtained by some others on the board. You still have leverage if you haven't inked the deal.

The BMW wheels are soft and prone to bending even if the tires survive a pot hole hit. If you get GY tires you will have a year of road hazard warranty included. Not sure about the other tire brands the car might come with.

Agree that windshield sounds like better covered by your auto policy.

I'm sure some of your fellow Houston F10 drivers will chime in with a recommended tint shop or you could search this board. (Tints are great and help with heat big time!)

Your rear tires are 275/35/19. The roads in LA are horrible, I haven't had any problems. Skip all the insurance and get someone other than dealer to tint your car. Ceramic or 3M crystalline. More expensive but worth it especially in very hot climates and also if you want a more OEM look as opposed to dark, pull me over tint.

Make sure you have full glass coverage with your auto insurance.

I don't believe in those types of "insurance". I think you have to add up all the products that offer insurance (appliances, electronics etc) and set up a fund of how much you WOULD be paying and put it in a jar. Then when you actually would have used it for something use money from the jar. I'll bet that after ten years there will still be money in the jar (obviously the companies that offer those policies expect to have money left in THEIR jar).

I had my windows tinted with a fairly standard tint, and I used the guy my dealer recommended. He did a great job and came to my house.

Kind of hard to give answers without seeing what your dealer is charging you for the items in question. A couple of items to keep in mind, one the windshield can be very expensive, especially if you have HUD. Even without, the dealer will charge toward $1000 for a replacement. I got a chip in my windshield the very first day I drove the car. I wasn't going very fast (maybe 40 MPH) and it didn't sound like a big rock. Nonetheless, I had a foot long crack before the end of the day. I have rather high comprehensive deductibles ($500) and ended up finding a repair shop that replace the windshield with OEM glass for under $500. I got lucky.

In regard to tint, definitely go for the ceramic in Houston. I got cheap and wished that I had spent the extra. Check out prices but if the dealer is charging more than $500 for ceramic, shop around.

In regard to the tire/wheel warranty, you need to definitely provide a price. As others have stated, it is very easy to bend a wheel. With that said, you can pick up an entire extra set of brand new wheels and tires for around $2000 on this and other forum's classifieds.

WOW, great info. To answer the questions:
I negotiated tint after i negotiated price, so they are giving me the 'regular' after market tint for free, or I can pay $100 up charge for the ceramic - worth it?
I dont have prices on the wheels & tires nor the windshield insurance, but I like the wheel/tire much more. I had an E60 550 and went through tires like water and had to have 2 wheels welded because of cracks due to inner loop driving in Houston.

what do you all think of the aluminum interior trim - not so much the cosmetic part, but more the fact that it is more delicate, no? Blemishes show much easier, right (Scratches)?

Pay the $100 for the ceramic in a heartbeat.

The wood trim scratches very easily also. The aluminum hexagon is much more forgiving by the accounts I have seen.

Ask the dealer who/where are they tinting your car. Sometimes the "free" tints are worth their price...

If you are buying from Momentum, most likely they will send it to X-pert Tint (houstontint.com). If that is the case, you should be good. They did 2 535's for me (2011 and 2012) and did a great job, one with Formula One ceramic tint, and the other with Llumar AirBlue 80.

I bought the wheel and tire insurance, but in hindsight I wish I hadn't done it. The tires normally come with one year of road hazard insurance anyway, and for the price of the insurance, you can buy a complete set of wheels and tires from fellow festers right here, who normally replace the OEM wheels/tires for aftermarket ones. I recently bought a full set of brand new tires for $900 (50% less than Tire Rack...)

Don't think you will need the insurances.

Where are they tinting your car and what kind of tint is it? Ceramic is the way to go, definitely worth the extra money if you have to spend it. Should be no more than $450. Huper Optik and Formula 1 Pinnacle Series are the best in the market.
Metallic tint - there have been complaints on navigation/cell phone reception so I don't recommend it.

I think your tires are 275 35 19 rear and 245 40 19 rear. Those are real low profile tires. I would definitely get tire insurance.

The dealer is doing the tint for me since I got them to throw it in. I am paying $100 extra to get the ceramic tint. They will be using Llumar.

BTW, wheels can be repaired overnight in Houston for $130 and they will look brand new the next day. Wheels American off 290 & Dacoma (I think on Sherwood, I'd have to look it up). Just looked them up, that is correct.

You should find out WHO is the actual company doing the install. A free crappy tint is still a crappy tint. I got the Formula 1 ceramic done for about 350.00

Congrats Joey!

I hope the guys at Expert-Tint did a great job for you... they did two 535's for me and I was very happy about it.

Also, I read your comments comparing your new 535 vs the '06 550, and it looks like they confirm my thoughts that the new 535 would be as good, if not even better than the '06 550.

Cheers!
