Have you ever seen this?

I bought this 67 2000 CS a few months ago from a guy who said that the car had been stored for 10 years but started the engine every couple of weeks. Overall the car has slight rust in the usual places. I finally got a couple of hours free to do a light tune up. I decided to take the vavle cover off to inspect the top end and tu oil up whatever I could. I've never seen an engine this clean.

To finally get to my question; do engines usually look this good? If the outside wasn't so dirty and orignal, I would swear the engine was rebuilt. Am I wromg?

Certainly looks like it has recieved some TLC. Does it run? Do a compression and leak down test to give you some idea of the condition of the internals.

The car was running but not very well. I took the gas tank and fuel sending unit (fuel pump) out and clean them out. I was going to put oil on the ope end along with fresh spark plugs & wires.

Nice find. I always loved the 2000. I am especially envious of the metal radiator! Wish they still used them.

I don't have pictures handy, but my original engine with 154K looks that good too...never rebuilt to my knowledge.

This is why your father told you to change oil every 3000 miles. I'd be very surprised if there's anything at all wrong internally in that engine. There's lots of other reasons for it to run crappy. Start with the cheapest stuff first and work your way up the cost ladder until it sings like it should. Plugs and wires are a great start. Thoroughly cleaning the fuel system is a bit ambitious at this stage but it'd probably have to be done eventually to a car that's been stored a long time. Checking the distributor and points and all of the essential electrical connections should come well before tearing the carb apart. Most carbs are pretty patient - they can sit for decades without needing a rebuild, although some do have bits made of natural materials, rubber and cork, that will dry out eventually.

A 2000 CS was a pretty radical looking car in its time. I've got to admit, though, I like the body style better after they put a full width grille and round headlights on it. The later cars didn't look so boat-like to me. I love that greenhouse, though, on the whole range.
