Increased emissions (service engine soon) help! :/

Ok so I'm 18 and I don't exactly know what to do. It says to bring the car to the "stealership". should i really do this as soon as possible? should i definitely get a second opinion? what do people mean when they "run codes"? btw, im not sure why the light came up. however, i did get my oil topped off by them on may 12th. my oil status says i still have 3400 miles left til my next oil change.

5 minutes after starting this thread, my dads good friend, who owns a 3 series said the light is nothing much to worry about unless there are codes (which would be seen where the notification symbols show up the speedometer). he took it for a drive. i personally think it was a pointless drive. idk if he wanted to drive it for the hell of it or cuz he was testing the car. but he suggested that i get a whole new oil change since i havent had one since september 2011.

Should I not be driving it? what do you think? tips/suggestions? thanks all! any answers appreciated!
