E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Unhappy 135I launch control

Hi, I am new to this forum, I live in Adelaide, South Australia and have a wanderfull 135i in Le Mans blue. My question is, as I have DCT, does my car have launch control? the book says yes, I cannot get it engaged (tried so many times) driven 10ks, car has done 7500KLMs but no good. It is in for its first service today, the tech says that they don't have launch control. Does it ?

I don't imagine cars in Australia are any different than in the US... it should have LC; I know mine does.

OK, quick cheat-sheet on how to do it.

First warm the car up... drive for about 15-20 minutes before you try to engage it. This ensures the oil and coolant are at a nice temperature.
Stop the car.
In normal driving mode, hit the DSC button ONCE (don't hold it in).
Flip the shifter over to the left to put it in "S1"
Hit the "Sport" button (as if you don't drive with it on all the time anyway )
Pull the left paddle once or twice to ensure you're in "M1" (I always do it twice when doing LC, probably pointless)
Hold the brake with your left foot
Mash the gas pedal all the way down with your right
Flag should appear in the center of the dash showing LC enabled, and should rev to 3000rpm
Release the brake. And the hounds.

HTH. Really it's a lot simpler than it sounds. Normally when I am going to do LC I'm already driving in M mode... meaning using the shifter or paddles to change gear manually. Almost never drive in automatic mode. I also always drive with the Sport button engaged. So usually what I do is hit the DSC button while I'm slowing to a stop (if necessary... isn't always) and then when I stop all I need to do is do the flip-paddle thing twice (OK, probably just needs to be once, and maybe I don't have to... but this process works for me) and do the "pedal dance".

At first I found LC a pain to use, but now that I have my little routine down I can get it to enable 100% of the time. I think the key is to make sure the car is in M1 (hence the double-paddle) and to REALLY MASH that gas pedal. Don't worry about breaking the car; you won't.

Launch Control

Thanks Thumper (I need me one of those names), the dealer got it to work but me still no good, do you need to swear at the car if it does not do as its told? must try that one, anyway I will give it another go with your procedure and hopefully it will be all good. The dealer did not know that the car had launch control! thanks again.

Andrew

LOL... congrats and you're welcome. Be careful with it though; it's addictive. My rear tires are already looking a little ragged and I haven't even hit 10K miles yet

Hmm yes those tyres, do you think you will stay with the run flats or change to the more standard garden variety?

Pretty much depends on how you want to beat them up.
