key will not turn, steering wheel locked

The key will not turn in the ignition, tried the extra key and it worked once, now neither key will turn and the steering wheel is locked, what could it be? 2004 X3

Make sure it is in park and your foot is on the brake; if the steering wheel is still locked, pull firmly to one side or the other.

Jiggle wheel a bit side to side as well. Sometimes it will lock against the torque.
2013 S4 Loaded (and NO RFT's) Awesome is an understatement

+1, you might have to "jiggle" the wheel with a fair amount of force -- back and forth -- to get it to unlock. Don't give up.

TRy this

If your front wheels are turned significantly one way or the other they may be putting a lot of pressure on the steering apparatus thus not allowing the key lock to release. If this is the case you might try jacking the front end up to release the tension and see if the lock will release then. I had a family member with a Cherokee that parked with his wheels in full lock position and as soon as the wrecker started dragging him up on the rollback they lock released and he was good to go.

Yes, frustrating. You will feel as if you are going to break something, but follow the advise above and you will be OK.

Mine had this problem too. Upon closer examination I noticed the grooves in my key were really dirty. I cleaned the key with 409 and an old tooth brush and some plastic pics I use to clean firearms. I also took the vacuum to the ignition with a little detail nozzle just in case there was some transferred pocket lint that could be dislodged.

The ignition has not stuck since.
