off the path, new car for my daughter

OK festers totally off the path.. but who do i trust when it comes to cars more then my fellow BMW enthusiasts..

i need to buy/lease a NEW car for my younger doughtier, sharing with her older sister just isn't working out!!!!

Not going crazy thinking 18-20K max!!! thought about maybe a used 3 series but they are over 20K or have 50K+++ miles on them..

Thinking of going the route of a Mazda 3?? A kia? A hyundai?? mini (but they also are higher priced) Nissan..... or inexpensive sub like kia sportage??

Anybody have any thoughts??

Also thinking should be front wheel or all wheel drive as we are New Yorkers!!!

Thanks in advance for any help and guidance... not a snob but just not my area of expertise.....

Sounds like a learning opportunity to me, mpress. Why don't you give her a budget and tell her to develop a short list. Then help her figure out projected costs, reliability, etc. That way, she's invested and has hopefully learned something about cars, car buying, and car ownership. She may even get a car SHE likes.

That said, the FIAT 500 seems super cool - I'd take a look at that one. Not sure about reliability - it's pretty new. The Hyundai Sonata seems to be a hot car right now, but it's not cheap.

I just went through this with my baby sister. I wanted something that was safe, reliable and awd. She wanted good gas mileage and cheap (preferably under 25K). Our short list for new cars was suburu (several models), cr-v/rav4. I'd look at suburu first, especially if you're thinking new.

Used opens up a lot more options --- for a while she was driving my 05 G35x. safe, reliable, awd, but averages 20 mpg. I think used 05-06 are around $15-17K. For low 20s you can get into 07+ (newer body style).

After debating safety vs size vs cost vs keep for long term or not? vs lease vs used vs . . . . we finally decided and picked up a 09 CPO 535xi sedan. Yeah, not exactly $25K but not that much more, and has everything (safety, size, gas mileage, etc) that we want.

Love starryeyeds idea but for some suggestions, I'd throw in the new Subaru Impreza or used Nissan Xterra. I was working a deal for the new impreza with a local dealership for a really well loaded model (sunroof, leather, nav, sat radio etc) for under 24k. Deal fell through because they were hosing me badly on the trade in. I have had two Xterras, an 03 and 07. I rather regret shedding either vehicle. They were very reliable, stable and mountain goats. Neither time did I walk out of the Nissan dealer feeling worked over.

I'd also add the new Mazda CX-5 to your list. I just helped a younger cousin of mine in the car buying process to get one - her first car, a college graduation gift from her parents.

Op, my fiancÚ jumped into a 2011 G25x this time last year and couldn't be happier. With her $2k trade-in she finagled a payment down to $299/month for 39months. We liked it because it had ALL the standard Infiniti features BMW typically charges for (backup cam, bluetooth, xenons, leather, comfort access, sat radio, etc) and doesn't have the high maintenance costs of the G37 (eg. 17 vs 18in radials). As previously mentioned by Kash it doesn't get amazing gas mileage (~20-22 city) and still takes premium; but, for the safety of all-wheel drive we were willing to make that compromise.

Some good replies here, would add to stay away from the Rav4. My oldest daughter had that as her first car, bought at 2 yr of age and by yr 5 it was a maintenance nightmare. Problems seemed small but the cost of repair was outlandish!
