X3 - replacing 17" alloys with 18" ones

Hi all,

I have a 2004 X3 2.0td. I love my car but have always hated the alloys on it. As it's time for me to replace all 4 tyres I thought I'd have a look around at 2nd hand BMW alloys (that I like). I currently have 17" BMW alloys but like 18" BMW alloys but don't know the first thing about whether or not they would fit. The 18" ones were removed from a E92 SE. Will they fit? Also the tyres I currently have are 235/55/17 on all 4 wheels. The ones I am looking at have 225/40/18 front tyres and 255/35/18 on the rear wheels. Will this combination be ok with an X3. I've had problems with replacing only 1 tyre after a blow out in the past due to the fact that the tread depths have been different, the cars rear wheels used to slip at the back end so I know I have to run 4 tyres with the same tread depths. These 2nd hand wheels and tyres have 5mm tread on all 4.

Appreciate someone telling me if the wheels will fit and if the tyre difference will be ok. Much appreciated.

Cheers
Natalie

That's maybe a bit too small a tire&wheel assembly for the X3.

I think what you are looking at is:

Rim: 8 x 18 Front and 8,5 x 18 Rear

ET 34 (offset in mm.)
ET 37

Tires: 225/40 R18 and 255/35 R18

That is, the width is O.K., but the overall height of the tire&wheel looks to be too small (without doing the calculation).

The offset (ET) on your 17's is 46, so those wheels would be sitting out a bit more (< 0.5").
Not a clearance issue, but might affect the steering feel.

Assuming the center bore size is the same as the X3, and your lug bolts are compatible, they could bolt up successfully. But I think you are better looking for alloys from an earlier X5.

Can't see the point of having a staggered setup unless the tires are wider than original.

My '06 3.0 came new with the factory option 18" alloy wheels. So, at least those wheels do fit.

Be VERY careful running staggered wheels/tires on your AWD X3. Transfer cases on it are very particular about all 4 tires being equal in diameter.
