Fuel pump stopping
One time I went to 76 and filled the tank by accident with 87 gas. The fuel pump automatically stopped before filling it to the top.
Today, I filled the tank with 91 gas from arco, the fuel pump kept stopping...at 4 dollars, at 12 dollars, and so forth. Is this a glitch? |

Better than when I last filled up and the shut off didn't work at the delivery hose & gas spilled out. Still haven't cleaned it well from the cascade off the body panels.

Air and fuel vapors in the tank have to escape to allow the fuel to go in. The normal path is through the carbon canister which traps the fuel vapors and allows the air to pass. Either the vent valve is stuck closed or in some cases the carbon canister itself has plugged up. Do you like to top off your tank when filling up? That can cause gas to get inside your carbon canister and plugging it up. Any how, you will need a technician familiar with evaporative emission systems to test and find out whats wrong.

seems to happen to me all the time at some Chevron stations. I have to get the pump on there just right or it will stop over and over again. I once said screw it and drove to a different station. I think it has to do with the vapors recirculating back up and the pumps thinking the tank is full.

Maybe your 328i is saying something to you about cheap (87 & Arco) gas!
![]() No. I don't have anything meaningful to add. But I have a cheap streak at times (see our options list below) and I plan on shifting to 89 to see if there's any meaningful decrease in mpg. Our 328i is really my wife's grocery getter. She's not all that into street racing anyways. So what the heck, right? The manual says down to 87 is ok. Good luck. Hope your fix is easy.

After so many months, I tried the Chevron station again to see if they resolved the issue. I still had problems, and had to go to Shell to finish filling up, so two transactions for the day. I have formally given up on my old filling station. |

Yeah I think I'm going to fill up at the 76 from now on. They have 110 octane fuel for $8.50/gal

As I start trying to get more gas in, a different lady approaches me, saying that she is the manager and happened to overhear me. (I wouldn't be surprised if she was either wife of the owner or some other family member, but just guessing there.) She said to try rotating the nozzle sideways. She at first couldn't remove the pump, in order to rotate it, as there was a lot of suction or something, probably due to my multiple efforts in getting a full tank or something near it. Once I got it off, she did rotate it, not far from 90 degrees, and it pumped with no problem until it was full. So my tip to share: if you have this problem, try rotating the pump nozzle! |
