Any suggestions on best route back to new York?

I'll have 3 days to do it (including the day I take delivery). Was thinking of doing roughly 4 hours per day..

I used to drive Atlanta to NY quite a bit and the Performance Center in SC is along the route. I used to take 85 to Charlotte then cut up through WV to 81 in VA. Take that all the way through PA (78 I think) until you hit 287, then depending where in NY you are headed you've got a number of options. Even though it is a bit longer route than 85 to 95 I find it to be a much nicer drive, and a lot less truck traffic. Plus depending on how adventurous you are you can hop off 81 and hit the Blue Ridge Parkway and do a little spirited driving through the mountains.

Blackburg, VA for night one is +/- 4 hours from the PDC. That's where VA Tech is. Good selection of hotels and restaurants. Then, probably northern VA, say Arlington area, for night two. That's +/- 4.5 hours from Blacksburg. That should leave a tad more than 4 hours for day three depending where in NY you are going.

Also, if you do get off and tool around Blue Ridge Parkway there isn't a lot to do other than drive as I recall. No restaurants, gas stations, etc. The bathrooms are pretty minimalist. Worth it for the scenery, just don't expect much else.

You can exit out of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, NC which is a sizable town...and visit the Biltmore Estate!

This however, doesn't play well within your 3-day schedule since Asheville is only about 60 miles North of Greer as the crow flies. You also need at least 1/2 day at Biltmore. Definitely worth visiting though.

Reviving a year-old thread, anyone else have any suggestions from Greer to NY metro area routes?

Well, its not really on the way, but you have to do a run of the tail of the dragon while you are in the general area. Its not too far out of the way.

It's a really good idea but sadly too far out of the way (I think the drive from Greer to TotD is well over 2 hours and it's in the opposite direction from NY).

Go north to Blue Ridge Parkway and take it to Virginia where you go back onto interstates. If it works for you, the Osceola Mill is a very nice B&B near the northern end of the BRP. The road from the BRP to the mill is also a nice drive, at least the first half. You won't be able to go the speed limit and stay on the road.

There are side trip opportunities along the BRP. You need to get the guide available over the internet. I went to some falls, I think they were the Lynn falls. You hike a while through the woods to a pretty waterfall. Lots of scenic overlooks. Not many restrooms, however.

I took a short ride on the BRP just to see it before heading to MA, it is a really pretty ride with lots of turns, but slow speed limits. I stopped overnight in NC, DE and NY along the way, but I was visiting friends.

So what are you picking up, or is that top secret?

Gettysburg, PA is not far off the track. That is worth a whole day, IMO. You can stand where Lee sent Picket's brigade off, and wonder how the eff he could send men on that walk, knowing the current firepower. Then, go up to little round top where the 20th Maine held the line.

It is worth a whole day, at least.
