Don't know if you can rely on Sony and BMW using the same color coding.

Here's the speaker wire colors for the 2004 X3:

Usually best to get a manufacturer-specific harness that will interface between the 2, to save guessing and having to tap (or cut) wires.

Keep in mind that the factory radio doesn't have speaker level output because the amp. in the trunk drives the speakers.

So now with your Sony head unit installed, if the amp. is not powering up then your speakers are effectively not connected to the Sony.

Also, I think the stock radio has both a live 12V feed and an ignition-switched 12V.
Not sure if 12V power for the amp. comes through the stock radio or directly, but you may need to make sure the 12V sources are all mapped properly for your new setup.

You may have to wait for one of our audio experts to chime in, or post your question in the Sound Upgrade Sticky thread.

Supercourse I think you're correct. Probably the new unit is not powering up the amp. There is an output from the stereo that does this.

I figured it out guys. Thanks a lot for all of your input. Simplest thing, i did not connect the blue remote amp wire of the sony harness to the car harness.
