Water Pump Bolt Issue

I have 01 740il and was almost done installing my water pump when the last bolt broke. it's one of the long ones.

I really need some advice on what to do next. Extract whats left, or?

Is there an extractor long enough to get the bolt out?

You are going to have to start all over. Get a new gasket, and new bolts from the dealer. I hope there is enough to extract the broken part. Always use new bolts.

Get a bolt extractor kit from Sears or NAPA. Get the broken bolt out, go to realOEM.com, and scroll down for the cooling system diagram. Take the part# for the broken bolt and google it, a bunch of stores will have it listed. Or get another one from dealership.I would not recommend to run the car with the bolt missing from the water pump! Like noodlesandsam said start over again or take the car to a shop where they can do that for you. Last thing that you want to do is to mess the hole where the bolt broke, and you will have to take the timing cover off most likely. If you start again use a torque wrench when tightening. The values are here http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/209627

Thanks for replying. It's kinda hard to use an extractor without taking the lower cover off. The hole is too small and the extractors are not long enough. There a lot of work to remove the covers.

Unless I'm missing something, is there a way to remove the broken bolt without taking the covers off?

I don't think there is. I see you have the M62TU engine. Timing and VANOS...The long bolt that broke (like you stated) is tight into the engine block, sealing in the same time the timing cover against the block, where there is a coolant passage towards the engine, and the water pump. Without this bolt tighten as suposed to, the coolant might leak into the engine.

Yes you are correct. Without this bolt screwed all the way to the block may cause water in the engine. I'm just very said now . Now I have to send my car to indy and get a $1.5k to $2k bill for this stupid mistake.

Yeap, that's the worse that can happen. Buy the tools for timing for less than $500 and spend the rest for timing guides & tensioners. Couple nice afternoons and you car is ready for another couple years ...

Thanks for the advice. Can you please give some details on the tools that I would need to invest for this job and for the timing guides and tensioner? I guess a parts list?

BTW, just asking, do i have to do the all that just to get the bolt out?

Well if you just want to take the bolt out you will need the tools to hold the camshafts, gaskets for timing covers and valve covers. If you are handy you can build the tools yourself. There are people out there that they are renting them too (german brand) but for that cost you can buy a set (china brand) which should be good for at least one use. I have spent $0 on tools when I removed my cylinder heads, did the valve/timing job. But takes more time and patience. I took several pictures but they are on a laptop which is dead at the moment.
If you want to do the timing guides (recommended since you are in there) you do need to do all of those.

Here is a thread with a detailed DIY for tools, you can find the template for the camshafts tool in there also.http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...ow+compression
If you want to buy the set it has to look like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-M60-M62T...ht_4290wt_1169
Again this is a long job, if you feel like you can't do it take it to a shop.
