No problem..

Find a 4 door.. In the color you like.. that HAS BEEN maintained.
(its not about the miles, its about the maintenance. real talk.)

Dont even worry about *tuning*.. that will come later when you've
got a bunch of tasteful mods done to your new E36.

Right now.. You want a clean, maintained E36 with (cross fingers) maintenance records.
(oil change receipts, service done, parts purchased.. etc)

What are you looking at now? Craigslist? Autotrader?

Yup.. was in OB, PB, Vista, Ramona...

Your fine.
Dont fall victim to the illusion of numbers (i.e. 325 328 etc)

Find a style (E36) you like, with a motor you can massage to get the performance you want.

Grab a 4 door..
get a inline 6 motor.. (S|M 50/52)
Start with proper maintenance.. or get a properly maintained BMW.
Then, when the brakes need attention.. upgrade your brakes. (get the "whoa" before the "go")
Then the suspension.. make sure she gots handles.
Then you can start throwing chips and intakery, and exhaust.. and .. and..

After 1996 the on board diagnostics went from OBD1 to OBD2.
You're.

The M52B28 is OBDII. The OBDII regulations went live starting with 1996, so BMW was sure to be ready.

It's easier to smog OBDII cars anyway, so as a CA resident, that's what you'll want.

$3k max.. (and i could find things wrong with it.)
That rear end is pretty aggressive.. Your MPG is gonna be poo-poo.
You could swap it out with a lockup 3.15.. ($200)

edit: and its been gutted for race spec (?) no interior.

Worth checking out, but with no interior, I can't say it's worth 4k.

I love how we can argue about semantics and technicalities and still be friends.

That IS exactly what was stated.

Perhaps I should have gone into great depth.. I figured a sentence would do.
Since you know the same information I do, perhaps that was redundant.

Except that you said after 1996 (which would be 1997) BMW switched from OBD1 to OBD2, when in actuality it was after 1995 (i.e. 1996) that the switch took place.

I guess I should have said after the first of the year in 1996 BMW had to comply with emissions regulations which included the switch to OBDII.
