Mein Auto: 2012 BMW X5D
I'm living out of Stuttgart and so I get to check out the european spec X5's, and they all come with the shocks installed. I picked my X5d up last week in Munich, and installed the thing in their delivery room while the BMW rep just stood there with his mouth open! I didn't care, I told him "it should have come with this from the factory, don't you think?" to which he replied, "ya, I zink zo". Then I drove out of the building a happy man.

Thanks penguin for providing useful information in an early thread. I took the dive and ordered these two parts from a local dealer:

1. Gas pressurized spring, part number 51476980060, $49.58
2. Spring bracket, part number 51479138212, $8.07

When I picked up these parts at the dealer, I found the bracket came in without the screws. So I asked nicely at the dealership and actually got them to put it on for me. It is so straightforward that they did it for free. It took just a few minutes to mount it on.

I attached a few before and after pictures. Note in the before picture, there are holes pre-drilled on the cargo cover for the bracket (red cycle 1). The spring will hook up with bracket and the other end of the spring goes to the pre-existing hook-up (red cycle 2).

The last picture shows now the cover can stand up by itself! what a relief.

Still can't believe BMW pre-drilled the holes, then choose not to install the parts.
Thanks for the heads-up regarding this item. Just finished the install of the emergency spare tire in my recently acquired 2013 X5.

Hey all,

New to the forums (first post) and thanks for sorting this lift spring out for me. I just picked up a '12 X5 35d and hounded the sales guy for the lift since it was apparently standard on 2011's. He checked with a few people who gave different answers (read: no one knew what was going on) and finally the parts desk said the spring was now only included only with the spare tire kit. Any of you who got the spare without the spring should look into this, or maybe BMW lets the dealers decide how to part with their measly little $50 spring kits.

Again, thanks for the thread (already bought the parts) and I look forward to all you great advice on the boards.

Freewheeler thanks for info. Purchased a 2013 X5 35i premium a few weeks back and later purchased a spare tire kit with all the associated gear. The thought
of a tire failure in which the spare would last only 50 miles was unacceptable. Composite cost was about $500.00 which included triangle reflector. Unfortunately the aforementioned
kit to hold up the cover was not included in the price. As mentioned earlier on this forum, BMW expects you to remove the spare while holding up the cover with your head. Its seems
that BMW is becoming like Porsche, where everything is extra. The spare tire kit was a hit in the pocket, but i intend on replacing the run flat tires when their tread ware is below the acceptable
level.

My 2010 Diesel came with the spare tire option from the factory and did not have the gas cylinder installed. I ordered the parts and added it myself - very easy to do with the OEM parts.

Question

My 2013 X5 with spare did not come with cargo lift shock so I may pick one up - the shock fits ok with the spare in place?

Yes, but remember you need the bracket as well as the gas cylinder. The bolts are available and cheaper at most hardware stores, but for convenience you can order those from BMW at the same time.

FYI, just installed the gas cylinder and it failed the first time I closed
the panel. Waiting for a replacement part from BMW. Hopefully its not
a lot problem

Finally got mine installed. Definitely a must-have if you ask me. Just lift the latch and the gas spring does the rest.

Does anyone with the spring have a rubber trunk liner and is the spring strong enough to lift it as well?

Picked up kit for $51, installed it last night. Took a few minutes - hardest part was climbing in and out of the cargo space. So far works fine.

To answer my own question, I installed the lift and it's more than strong enough to hold the trunk liner up. VERY nice to have the lift; it actually makes the underfloor space useful on a day-to-day basis.

One Spring

One spring but it obviously has to be the correct amount of strength/force for the application. Too strong is as bad as too weak.

Shouldn't there be two springs? one on each side?? Having only one in the middle just doesn't seem to be sturdy enough.

Installation

Sorry to hear you climbed in and out of the vehicle. I had no difficulty installing mine without climbing in. You got a very good price for sure.

For those who don't have this installed yet or can't get to Tischer BMW to pick up, I presently have my last 13 lift support kits for sale here:

Anyone getting any better prices on this kit?? I've checked all local BMW dealer and getting quotes of $100 and up now.

I put this off in the beginning and totally forgot about it. Now I want to have it installed and the prices on the Gas pressurized spring, bracket and screws are very overpriced..

I ordered from Tischer (wwwgetbmwparts.com) as well. I had it installed in two minutes. Easiest retrofit ever!

My 2010 X5 35d doesn't have it as well.

I did quick check and found spring at ebay for $25 shipped (OEM), will get screws in Lowes and bracket from dealer.
